[Complete] The Savarti
« on: May 02, 2015, 11:55:54 pm »
The Savartar

Designation: Sentient

Homeworld: Traja Odjis

Language: Flugi and/or Galactic Standard

Average height of adults: 5' 3'' (Male) 4' 11'' (Female)

Skin color: The Savarti's skin tends to be a fleshy pink underneath their feathers. The feathers themselves tend to be black, but albinism is relatively common among the species, affecting around a quarter of the population.

Hair color: Their hair is usually just a tuft of feathers they have decided to style on top of their head. They remain the same color as the rest of the feathers, unless they are dyed. Dye colors range from conservative shades of black to more exuberant colors such as neon green or pink. It usually depends on the personality of the individual as to which color they choose.

Breathes: O2 or O3, at usually low pressures around 70 kPa, with a ratio of 1:10 with other gases such as N2 or CO2. They cannot breath CO, or other various air-based poisons that affect warm blooded creatures.

Strengths: Agility: The Savarti weigh very little, and their feathered arms allow them to push off the air around them, giving them an enhanced ability to jump, run, and dodge.
Perceptive: The Savarti have specially adapted eyes, with a very wide field of view nearing about 280 degrees on the horizontal and about 70 in the vertical, suited for taking in a large amount of information in a short amount of time.

Weaknesses: Weak Bones: Their bones are lightweight, but also not very strong. They break very easily compared to other races, and older Savarti tend to be very susceptible to osteoporosis.
Lean Muscles: The Savarti are not known for their strength. Very few of their species grow up to be bodybuilders, as their muscles tend to be more dense and, in turn, weaker than most other races.

Distinctions: Very birdlike. They stand on two clawed feet, with a tough scaly hide running down from their high ankles to their toes. They have three forward facing toes, and one backward facing toe, each tipped with a usually dull talon. The rest of their bodies are covered in feathers, and their arms are covered with long feathers, reaching around 1' 5" on average. Their hands, however, are covered in a scaly hide similar to their legs, and have three fingers and a thumb for fine manipulation. These digits are also tipped with talons, but these have evolved over centuries to be rather short and ineffective as a weapon. Their heads are rounded, and a hard beak protrudes from their face. Their eyes have round pupils surrounded by a thick yellow cornea that protects their eyes against debris. Their bodies tend to lean a bit forward thanks to the double jointed structure of their legs, and this is balanced out by a plume of tail feathers at their rear end. These tail feathers usually reach lengths of about three feet, but can be longer or shorter depending on the size of the savartar.

Average Lifespan: Around 75 years for females, and 65 for males.

Races: Blackbirds: These Savarti occupy the majority of the population, being covered in naturally black feathers.
Whitebirds: These are Savarti that have white feathers due to albinism. While they look different, they are well integrated into their specie's society as a whole and experience little to no stigma regarding their condition.

Estimated Population: The Savartar have fully settled four worlds, and colonized two more in their home star system of Ljosio, with their population reaching around 20 billion.

Diet: The Savarti are biologically omnivorous, capable of digesting both cellulose and flesh. They eat mainly plant matter, as most of their culture has evolved around a scarcity of meat. Seeds and nuts make up the majority of their diet, while juicy things such as fruit are usually eaten either dried or as a seasoning. Meat is considered a delicacy due to is scarcity, and to many it tastes too different from their usual foodstuff to be enjoyed.

Communication: Savarti communicate verbally, through chirps and warbles in their native language. When speaking Galactic Common, they usually speak very quickly and sometimes mis-pronounce words that are heavy on the "o", such as "moon" or "shore", producing more of an "a" sound like "man" or "shar".

Culture
Religion - The majority of Savarti follow a poly-deitical system known as the Sal Margir Gušir, which translates roughly to the Hands of Many Gods. Savartarian homes come equipped with a great many shrines to a great many gods, with the selection of gods changing depending on the livelihood the house survives on. In the house of a mason, one might find a shines dedicated to Klettur, God of Stone, Faglęršur Hönd, God of Handiwork, and Oflugur, God of Strength. Shrines consist of a statuette and a plate on which to place offerings. Offerings are usually fragrant herbs or colorful candles, but for those days when one might really need some help, offerings of meat or animal blood are not unheard of.
The exact number of gods the Savarti worship is unknown, even to them. There is a saying among them, which translates roughly to "there is a god hiding behind every stone", poking fun at the fact.

Families - Their society is very familial. Parents and their young stay together long after the children have left the home to carve out their place in the world. Direct blood relations aren't stressed as much as simply being part of the family. Marriage into a family automatically makes the in-law just as close as a mother to her child. These family members will fight to the end for one another, and will drop everything to support a brother in need. Blood feuds between families are common and known to rage on for decades, long after the cause was forgotten, and it is the highest honor in their society to die defending one of their own.

Social Structure - Classes do very much exist within Savartarian society, however they exist more laterally than vertically. People are grouped based on their profession, and tend to live together as a result. Neighborhoods and sometimes entire towns can consist of craftsmen, merchants, or politicians. They are all equal in social standing, but will stay separate in professional dealings.
Vertically, classes split into three categories: Royalty, Military, Workers, and the Lesser. The first three are fairly self-explanatory, those born into royalty are at the top of the food chain, and everyone answers to them. Below them are soldiers and officers of the military, who command the utmost respect. Workers are those who have a job and contribute to society through their labor, and the lesser are those that refuse to work. Drunkards, criminals, and the unemployed all fall into this category and are frowned upon by society as a result.

Clothing - Most Savartarian clothing consists of a sleeveless torso piece and a loose fitting pair of pants or a skirt/dress. Sleeves are very rare and are usually quite large to accommodate their feathers. Pieces of clothing that are solid from shoulder to feet are uncommon, as a hole is usually required to keep the tail feathers from being caught in the clothing. Colors range from the more conservative blacks or browns to more exuberant colors like green or blue, and printed or embroidered designs are quite popular among the youth. Jewelry comes in the form of crowns or gems threaded onto strings that are then draped over the beak or head. Rings are common, with marriage being symbolized by a ring of the strongest metal the couple can afford placed around the thumb. Decorative rings beset with gems or glass are worn on any other finger, most popularly on the little finger.

Social Interaction - Savarti greet their friends another with a nod or a chirp, and greet strangers with a deeper nod or a bow depending on their social status. Lovers will greet eachother by touching beaks, which is an acceptable form of showing affection in public. Most will depart with a simple "goodbye", and couples will depart with a touching of hands or beaks.

Music - A lot of traditional Savartarian music is played with stringed instruments, as skins for drums are scarce and their biology makes it hard to play a wind instrument. Strings are usually made of springy Teygjanlegt tree roots, which are very elastic and produce a pleasing sound. The body of the instrument is usually constructed of carved wood and played similarly to a lute or guitar. Their music is very fast and upbeat, in which they try and emulate the feeling of the wind blowing across their mountainous homelands.

Technology Level
Faster-Than-Light: Capable, Very Fast, Widespread Use. Used on all ships excluding some fighters and ultralight craft.
Interstellar Communication: Capable, Average, Dependable, Ubiquitous.
Impulse Drives: Efficient, Lightning Fast, Ubiquitous. Sees use in both ships as well as most combat platforms.
Weapons Technology: Some use of more primitive weapons such a swords combined with laser weaponry. While able to hold their own against other more advanced civilizations, the technology available is not capable of destroying planetary surfaces or planets themselves.

General behavior: Savarti are agreeable during dealings with strangers of their own species; they aren't too friendly but they wouldn't be considered standoffish either. With members of other species, if they are complete strangers they consider the other warily, but as they learn more about the extraterrestrial their attitude would change considerably for better or worse.

History: The Savartarian homeworld is one covered in large mountains that stretch into the stratosphere, huge valleys that go on for miles, and one enormous ocean of poisonous water that produces a choking and unbreathable fog. Their existence in the valleys was characterized by the lack of trees and an abundance of hardy, tough plants and animals that populated the arid peaks. They first lived in small, wood and stone villages and were a primarily agricultural race. As time went on and their hunger for knowledge and a life beyond serfdom grew, they discovered conductive metals such as copper and aluminum in the surrounding mountains and entered the industrial age. Very few land vehicles were created for use, as the mountains prohibited easy road construction. Instead, their work was put towards building machines of flight. Helicopters, planes, and balloons were all quite popular among the species and they grew to cover the planet quite quickly. Nearly a century ago they gained the capability of interplanetary flight and conquered two more worlds in the name of their species, one a dry sandy world with rich aquifers deep under the surface, and the other a temperate forested world, where colonization was difficult because of the towering trees blocking their flying machines. With the turn of another decade, terraforming and FTL technology opened up the last four planets in their system for colonization. Two of these worlds were not different from their own, and the last two hang near the edge of the system and as such are cold and icy. Only recently did they come into contact with humans as their own interstellar "We're over here!" signal penetrated the deep galactic interference and arrived at the humans homeworld by sheer chance. Relations were tense at first, as questions about the intent of each species as well as the huge distance made the icebreaking difficult, but two diplomats flew to a midpoint to meet with two human diplomats, and together they told eachother with pictures and diagrams of eachother's species, and an alliance was struck.

Notable Player-Characters: None.

Intent: The increase of knowledge, and expansion of the reach of this species so that it may one day become a great star-striding civilization like the ones they used to write stories about.

I imagine that, being a race of grounded avian people from a planet that's almost entirely covered in mountain ranges or gassy valleys, who's main diet consist of crunchy green matter, and that have never really come across such a species as yours, they would have a hard time feeling comfortable around talking plants.

That doesn't invalidate our writer-bro-ness, however, and one of these days we will gain enough power to merge and become the glorious Super Writer Bro Mecha Guardian.
