A Brief Treatise On the History Of Galactic Basic

Assembled By Trityak Nizhdan Gori
Head Of The Kallisti Historic Approval Board

PREFACE

The study of Galactic Basic, possibly the only wide-spread inter-species language in present use, presents both fascinating and frustrating challenges to a researcher. On one hand, recent documentation of it's dialects, usage, and verbal syntax is readily available and easily understood, but on the other, it's actual origins and development  are incredibly difficult to trace. Not only that, but a critical review of the most prevalent origin theories presents a difficult set of conclusions that fly in the face of established theories ranging from the origin of individual species, to galactic history, to inter-species political interactions. While a true understanding could result in a massive advance of these fields of research, current approved theorization disagrees fully with what would appear to be the inevitable conclusions, namely [REDACTED].

This paper will attempt to summarize current plausible theories and known history, while addressing these concerns. It is my hope that our narrowminded view of [REDACTED], and accordingly, our place in the universe, can be expanded through better understanding of this.

HISTORY

The history of spoken Galactic Basic is difficult to trace, but earliest available historical records from the dawn of Rastal discovery of other species indicate that, while much of the language was developed by our race in co-operation with these other species, the basic phonetics and grammatical structure could already be found in up to [REDACTED], which comprises a large portion of known sentient life in the galactic region.

While spoken Rastali is likely the most "pure" of these languages in relation to the origin language, or rather, in terms of languages still in use, recent reconstruction of logical approximations of spoken Ancient indicate that it [REDACTED], and is likely responsible for the commonality of Basic's [REDACTED], which in some theories would explain the similarity and prevalence of those aforementioned linguistic components.

A close parallel can be drawn with obscure Terran history, in which a single, large [REDACTED]. Though the original Romyan language went extinct after [REDACTED], evidence of persistent basics, etymology, and other elements such as grammatical structure and written script persist in the native Terran language even to modern times.

A perhaps even more striking comparison could be made between modern Rastali and the language spoken by [REDACTED], or, to a lesser but still statistically significant extent, the similarity between Rastali and Terran languages of so-termed "slavic" basis.

This evidence all points to a simple, if somewhat fantastic, conclusion: at some point in the past, the majority of sentient life [REDACTED]. What became of the Ancients is of yet unknown, and is likely better left to other fields of inquiry.

The origins of written Basic are, surprisingly, much simpler to trace, at least on the surface. Comparison of ancient Rastali to the aforementioned exo-species languages indicate that at least some local alphabets present on the homeworld of a given species are [REDACTED]. Due to the extremely unlikely odds of this occurring spontaneously (relative to spoken language, as the vocal design of most sentient species does only allow for limited range in producible sounds), it would seem to reinforce the idea that [REDACTED]. While there is a marked difference between Ancient script and still-living languages at first glance, investigation [REDACTED] as evidenced by multiple character markers.

As mentioned in the preface, the implications of this theory, should it be true, are tremendous.

LINGUISTIC COMPOSITION

As this paper is already rather extensive, at [REDACTED] pages long, and many, many reputable dictionaries, lexicons, and other linguistic tools already exist that document proper usage of Galactic Basic, there is no further need to touch on these topics here.

As a brief summary, Basic is remarkable in that it consists of only phonics that species with a vocal structure similar to that of most humanoids can easily produce. Due to this, and owing to the large number of Rastali loanwords that comprise it's current make-up, the majority of native-Rastali speakers who wish to learn it should have no difficulty in gaining basic conversational skills with relative ease. This also holds true for members of other species originating in the galactic region mentioned above, though the level of difficulty is based on how [REDACTED] from the linguistic origin. This can be seen by the difficulty some Terrans have in learning Basic, with Anglash, the predominant language and alphabet used, being based on a heavily modified Romyan dialect rather than a more pure example such as Russian.

CONCLUSION

[REDACTED]

NOTE: CITIZEN TRITYAK'S CLAIMS HAVE SINCE PROVEN TO BE COMPLETELY UNFOUNDED, AND HE IS CURRENTLY DEEMED GORI AND FACING CHARGES OF SEDITION AND KNOWINGLY CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIAL CORRUPTION FOR HIS ROLE IN SPREADING THE MISINFORMATION ABOVE.

As per the IRC chat, here's how I see basic having come into existence and widespread use. The Rastal really don't like the implications that would seem logical here, but I think I've left it clear enough as to what those might be.

While this being official lore might seem to indicate a pretty Rastal-centric universe, this is just written from the perspective of a Rastal historian, and is really only one interpretation. Besides that, it was deemed in the IRC that the Rastal have been capable of inter-stellar travel for quite a bit longer than most of the other accepted and suggested species, and because they are expansionist enough to have contact with most other races, and also currently have a larger population* than all other presently suggested and approved races combined, it seems logical that basic would use more than a few Rastal words.

If I wasn't too clear on the implications, the idea here is that most species in the immediate area have at least one local language that is based on ancient. Much like the Roman empire, the Ancients controlled enough of an empire to have a significant impact on the linguistic development of developing local populations. Yeah, it's a little unrealistic as they maybe existed before many of these species evolved, but as a concept for why Basic even exists, it makes more sense than other things I could think of. Accordingly, the languages spoken by many of these races have some commonality, though much like English vs. Latin, it might be hard to detect due to corruption by other, naturally developed local tongues.

And yes, it would have made more sense to have the Terran equivalent be Sanskrit or some indo-based language, since they're apparently the oldest, but I went with a slavic tongue because actually CREATING a language based around it is much easier, and because SPACE COMMUNISTS and stuff. Also, cyrillic looks much cooler on the side of spaceships than sanskrit, and to me looks more "pictographic" even if it isn't.

Terra's also notable in that humans don't, for the most part, speak their version of ancient, unlike the Rastal and maybe other races. I'd expect that any culture that has experienced something like the Roman empire would also speak something different, as languages based local language would be much more prevalent than the ancient-based one. The Rastal didn't really have that. Similarly, species such as the Hellerite, who originate outside of space controlled by the Ancients, don't have any commonality in language at all. Beyond this, there are likely races which simply can't physically make the sounds required for basic.

This also isn't intended to OOC imply that all sentient races are somehow related to the Ancients, be it through actual genetic similarity, "ancient alien" engineering, or whatever. While the Rastali author is implied to draw that conclusion, it doesn't mean it's true, and I think should be left that way. A talking dog living in the Roman empire might speak latin, but it doesn't mean it's physical existence has anything to do with a human living in the same place and speaking the same language.

*For the record, that wasn't intentional and as I've mentioned to Vulnus at least, I'm very aware of the problems that creates (for example, why don't they rule everyone as they can literally crush someone like the Terrans through sheer numbers, an issue which Vulnus and I are working to address via GALACTIC POLITICS). You guys did approve it though, and I think the onus is on ya'll to simply make bigger populations and get them approved if you don't like it. Not to be a dick, but hey.
