Post by: Six on December 10, 2016, 12:59:01 am
Company Name: SiegeWorks Manufactory
Intent: Mass-produced arms for all races
Location: The Arma System
Affiliation: None
Worth: 487 trillion Standard Credits
Corporate Affiliations:
Ardite Industries: Main Rivals

Species Affiliations:
Terrans: Open Trade

Description & History:
Starting as a small arms manufacturing company on Terra Solus in the early days of firearms they eventually gained popularity as they slowly began to dominate the civilian firearms market using underhanded tactics, such as stealing blueprints for rival companies new firearms, and passing patents on them before they could be publicly announced. After nearly taking out all other Terran competition in the civilian market they began to expand into Millitary weapons production, again quickly becoming popular with less discerning militaries across the world due to their cheap mass produced firearms.

After the expansion of humans from Terra Solus they began to lose their foothold to their main competitors Ardite Industries, the resulting economic boom brought on by space travel developed by Ardite Industries, which SiegeWorks failed to steal, pushed SiegeWorks out of the limelight as many other rival companies appeared. Eventually using the last of their remaining wealth to purchase the rights to an entire uninhabitable planet in the Arma System they constructed their first 'SiegeWork Manufactory' on the planet, a move that almost causes the entire company to go bankrupt, eventually converting the entire planets surface into a manufactory all powered by cheap self sustaining robotic labour, as the need in production rose due to various conflicts across the galaxy SiegeWork's was well prepared to supply all sides with the required weaponry, yet never being able to match the quality of Ardite Industries products.

Eventually coming back to their former days of glory on a Galactic scale and eventually amassing the wealth to purchase the rights to all 8 uninhabitable planets in the Arma System, converting the entire system into a massive manufactory, allowing them to produce an unmatched quantity of firearms, allowing them go once again challenge Ardite Industries and brush aside most other competition. However most of SiegeWorks products focus on "Quantity over Quality", a trait that is slowly changing as production is being slowed down in favour of more advanced weapons being produced as a result of recently 'acquired' technology, stolen from Ardite Industries.

SiegeWorks maintains their own small private military, only a few thousand, armed exclusively with their latest tech as well as frequently hiring mercenaries, to "convince competition to cease production" and rarely recover equipment stolen by pirates.

A recent and somewhat surprising development with SiegeWorks has been their expansion into other, non-firearm types of weapons, presumably to allow them to compete with Ardite Industries in all areas, not just the firearms market, including producing Main Battle Tanks, Troop Transports, Fighter Ships and Small Cruisers, with rumours about plans for a SiegeWorks Flagship.

I'm going to reserve the few posts below this one for a 'catalogue' of SiegeWorks weaponry.
Suggestions for improvement are welcome since there's probably a lot more I can add to this, suggestions for products are also welcome.

Description: One of the first weapons produced designed to use the proprietary Siege round, a large Rocket Assisted HEAD (High Explosive Armour Defeating) round designed for use against even the most advanced of armours, capable of punching through most light vehicles with ease and traveling for a shocking 3000m, yet it's accuracy greatly suffers after 2000m rendering it effectively useless at that range. The rifle was mainly developed as an answer to the laser technology beginning to be developed by rival companies as a means to massively overpower any early attempts at advanced weaponry. The weapon however suffers from recoil and reliability issues, with the large round causing enough recoil to bruise the shoulder of most operators after repeated firing and the pressures generated from the round quickly cause parts of the rifle to wear out and require replacing, causing a potentially lethal malfunction otherwise, main reason for the weapons high modularity and ease of replacing almost any part in the field with minimal technical knowledge. This is however one of SiegeWorks more expensive firearms yet the price is for the most part justified in the weapon rarely needing to be fired more than once against anything less than a Main Battle Tank, even being able to punch though most Atmospheric Fighters, due to the Rocket propelled nature of the round it is also capable of being fired in a vacuum.
The Civilian model, the 900c, comes with only a 5 Round Integrated Magazine and a slightly higher price despite this, making it more common for Military versions to be bought off the Black Market instead for the same price.

Intent: Competitor to the S.I.R. Laser Rifle
Manufacturer: SiegeWorks
Model: M.I.S.
Affiliation: None
Modularity: None
Production: Custom Built
Material: Steel Alloy, Polymer and Synthetic Diamond

Classification: Laser Weapon
Size: Handheld, Two Hands
Status: Civilian and Military use
Length: 26"
Weight: 20 lbs
Ammunition Type: Fusion Cells
Ammunition Capacity: Unlimited
Range: 100m
Price 100,000 Standard Credits

Description: Modular Infantry Shotgun, or M.I.S is the first of it's kind, using plans stolen from Ardite Industries it was developed in relative secrecy. Considered less of an improvement over the Ardite Industries S.I.R and more of an alternative the M.I.S is much harder to produce and is therefore custom built to order, which also means it carries a hefty price tag, it is also slightly shorter but much heavier than the S.I.R. due to it's odd internal construction. The M.I.S fires a just a single beam, yet the beam spreads out into a wide cone, similar to the effect of a shotgun. The beams power is however greatly diminished over even a short distance and limits the weapon to 100m at maximum, where it will do little more than leave burns. The optimal distance for the weapon is half of this at 50m where the beam will have spread out enough to cause significant damage on a large area of the target yet will have not dissipated too much to be lethal. At point blank range the beam is capable of melting through most metals with a few bursts, depending upon their thickness. The weapon uses a somewhat unstable Fusion Reactor to power it, meaning it theoretically never requires reloading or recharging as it has an almost unlimited lifespan in its power cells, these power cells are prone to eventually overheating the weapon causing it to completely fail, which SiegeWorks is happy to repair for a minimal charge of 10,000 Standard Credits. Fortunately in the case of a catastrophic failure, the weapon exploding, The Operator and anybody nearby, will be instantly vaporised and be completely unaware of their instant death, this can however be caused intentionally and allow a damaged M.I.S to be used as a last resort grenade. The M.I.S also attempts to compete with the S.I.R by being almost totally modular, during construction the weapon can be totally customised by the customer, allowing almost any extra features to be built into the weapon for an extra charge each, no guarantee that these customisations will not affect the reliability and stability of the fusion core negatively is given and all modifications are made at the customers own risk.

Intent: Super-Lightweight Squad Support Weapon
Manufacturer: SiegeWorks
Model: Model 300
Affiliation: None
Modularity: Limited - Barrels and Rail attachments
Production: Mass Produced
Material: Lightweight Titanium-Vanadium Alloy

Classification: Squad Support Weapon
Size: Handheld, Two Hands
Status: Military
Length: 35"
Weight: 20lbs
Ammunition Type: 7.62x24mm
Ammunition Capacity: 150 Rounds
Range: 550m
Price 15,000 SC

Description: The Model 300 was built very early in SiegeWorks history and yet has always remained on sale, never being truly replaced. Often seen as the workhorse of a squad, capable of firing up to 1000 rounds per minute it is indispensable for laying down large amounts of fire in any direction. The relatively short length of the weapon allows it to be easily maneuvered as required in small spaces, such as aboard a ship. The entire weapon is designed to be as lightweight as possible, using a Titanium alloy, heavily comprised of Vanadium to give it extra strength, it however does still suffer from the main drawback of Titanium regardless in that it is subject to being easily damaged, due to its brittle nature, and thus requires a lot of maintenance and constant vigilance for parts that need replacing. It's somewhat unusual round is specifically designed to impart all of its energy into the very first thing it hits, allowing it to be incredibly powerful without a danger of over penetration, due to its common use among ship crews for defending the narrow corridors, this however leaves something to be desired when facing a large crowd of targets as it is almost impossible to injure more than one with a single round.

Intent: Recoilless Launcher
Manufacturer: SiegeWorks
Model: Model 1100
Affiliation: None
Modularity: None
Production: Mass Produced
Material: High-Carbon Steel

Classification: Launcher
Size: Shoulder Mounted
Status: Civillian-Military
Length: 49"
Weight: 40lbs
Ammunition Type: 40mm Unguided Rocket
Ammunition Capacity: 1
Range: 4000m
Price 12,500 SC

Description: The Model 1100 is the simplest launcher design possible, allowing costs to be kept down. Primarily designed as an Anti-Tank weapon it is capable of firing almost any 40mm payload, even improvised rockets. A simple tube with a firing mechanism means there are few parts that need replacing, giving it a very long service lifetime, however due to its construction from primarily High-Carbon Steel it does not survive the elements well and is prone to rusting, which may cause malfunctions, often being as harmless as simply not firing, rarely causing the payload to detonate within the firing tube. Intended to be fired from the shoulder it is also possible to mount a bipod onto the weapon for increased stability, it is often not required due to the recoilless nature of the weapon. Firing a single round at a time it is reloaded from the rear of the tube. Often nicknamed the "Bazooka" due to it's similarity to the first Anti-Tank launcher ever developed in Terran history.

Just gonna put this out there, but IRL 7.62x24 would be a ridiculously anemic round, with performance closer to that of a pistol round than a proper rifle cartridge. The closest real world equivalent to it (7.62x25) has a muzzle velocity of about 1800 FPS out of a submachine gun barrel using an 85 grain bullet. At 1800 meters, assuming you could angle the gun that much while still accurately shooting, you'd literally be able to deflect the thing with a loose bedsheet.

It might be nitpicky, but something TRULY magical would have to happen to propellant design to change that while still maintaining such small dimensions. Given that we're only 20 or 30 years ahead of present from my understanding, and evolution in ballistic weapons is typically pretty slow, that seems pretty unlikely to have happened.

As a solution, I'd just suggest making it bigger. Spec it out as a non-belted, rimless 7.62 calibre, with a 57mm case that is roughly 14mm wide, give it a steep shoulder and a very slight taper, and you have a fairly short (little bigger than .308) cartridge that will feed well in a semi-auto and reliably kill stuff out to 1000 meter with even today's powders. Run it at a very high pressure, and you can stretch that out pretty well. Say your gun is innovatively designed to eat the kick (because it would certainly be present), and there you go. Put a 150 grain bullet in it, and you have a good MG cartridge, and put a sleeker but heavier 180 odd grain bullet in it and you have a good sniper round.

The RAHEAD is a bit more sound, but 5000 meters (I mean, that's 5 KILOMETERS, which depending on where you are is beyond the horizon point) is pretty far, and when rocket assisted ammo has been tested IRL, it's been proven to perform better at medium distance than short or long. Being as it's less based in IRL tech, I have very little to offer in terms of suggestions regarding it.

/2 cents.

The 7.62x24 was supposed to be temporary until I found a caliber to use, I'll take that advice though because it saves me some work.
The RAHEAD is 5Km effective in vacuum, detonates after that, I should add that in. Probably somewhere around 2Km max in atmosphere might be better.

2 km is pretty feasible, and falls in the range of "it's been done, so is doable". I don't think 5 km in a vacuum is too unrealistic either, because vacuum.

I mean we're in a future where intergalactic travel is considered trivial, 2Km might even be a little under ranged for something like that, vacuum range could likely be longer but at the same time, you don't want to fire something and have it travel essentially forever.

I've decided to keep the 7.62x24mm round and cut its range down to 550m, this is a weapon designed to be used on ships, it's intentionally supposed to hit something and stop or bounce off a hard surface to prevent damage to the ship interior.

Well, like I said, using the next closest RL analogue as a basis, you'd have something like 45 ft-lbs of energy at that distance. Which is not enough to do much beyond give a good bruise. At 100 yards, you still have just enough power to probably kill someone (around 300 ft-lbs). It's just not heavy or fast enough to carry out well

Having been hit with ricochets from the cartridge I reference while shooting targets roughly 25 feet away, I can tell you it probably won't even break skin. I'd really just make it bigger, personally. Put the equivalent of space .308 in there, maybe. Or maybe use the existing cartridge and call it an SMG (which is what something like that would be IRL), knock the range down to 200-300 yards, and build up a GPMG to go with it.

Like I say, just my 2 cents. I'll leave final say as to how effective it is to you and the other GMs, being that it's a game and all.
