Title: [Religion/Group] The Astorans
Post by: RedVulnus on December 31, 2016, 11:14:23 pm
Name: Astorans
Intent: Honor the Ancestors and protect Astoris
Location: Astoris
Affiliation: None

Description & History:
The Astorans follow the Honored Ancestors with the major(and first) Ancestor being a man known as Astorin. To the Astorans those who achieve great and honorable things become gods when they die and are revered as such. All of the honored dead are buried on Astoris and as such the planet holds a very strong spiritual significance and as such they will fight and die before letting anyone take the planet from them.

This was attempted once by a species that is slowly but surely going extinct. The resulting conflict lasted nearly five years and has resulted in a severe decline of the species that made the attempt. During this conflict an entire planet was rendered into rubble accidentally(it is still being discerned what caused the destruction)  and the Astorans ignited another planets atmosphere killing everything on the planet and destroying the atmosphere itself.

No other groups have tried to remove them since and the planet has remained under their control despite the fact the majority of them are out and about in the universe working as hired soldiers or bounty hunters with the occasional healer and such. All of this is overseen by the leader of the group who takes on the mantle of the Honored One. The council which resides under the Honored One chooses someone to take his place in the event of his death.

Honor is typically achieved through combat and skill in the art of it. Honor can come from teaching a new generation of warriors or actively participating in conflict, whether or not it is as hired hands does not matter. Some have found honor in working as healers and chefs and other such work.

yeah I'm probably going to need to rewrite some of this but for the time I've put in it looks decent and I've got other things I want to do for tonight so...

Why is that specific planet sacred?

Basically, every single honored dead including Astorin is buried there. It's also been there homeworld for as long as anyone has known about them

I know you told me before, but I can't remember - that means they're a single race then, or just likeminded individuals?

any race can join, it's just a matter of proving yourself to whatever group of Astorans you're trying to join since usually new members join through working with current members who then vouch for them or you're born into it.

Also, outsiders joining is a rough kind of thing. I don't have a lot of time but I'll detail how people join the Astorans when I do.

Initiation
The Astorans have a right of passage simply called the initiation. This normally involves going with a group of Astorans that passed the initiation already and proving you are an honorable combatant and ally to fellow Astorans. This process takes upwards of a year with the longest recorded initiation taking 15 years, primarily due to the contract the group was under requiring they stay until the conclusion of the conflict.
This process is usually easier for those born into being an Astoran but it's a right of passage they must accomplish as well. For outsiders the initiation can be a tricky thing depending on the group you are going out with. Some may push or require more dangerous actions while others would treat you as any other member of their party. Even then outsiders are still judged more harshly by the council to determine if they have passed the initiation or need to go out again to continue the process.
