So, someone PR'd a few updates for my Arcana mod repo, which is good since I've been barred from the CDDA repo and thus won't learn about stuff being changed. I'm now doing some fuckery of my own to make summoning suck less ass.

Namely, summoning blank bodies and flaming eyes maybe have to go. Blank bodies are stupidly weak and won't attack, while flaming eyes will only use their attack on the player, if hostile. Uncertain what'd be good choices of comparable monster difficulty.

This would be neat except it only summons one thing at a time. And no, the skeleton wars are already lost. 3:

I dunno how much of the Cata stuff is externalized anymore, but take a robot, rename it to something that isn't robotic-sounding, and use that. The logic is in place for them to kill things besides the PC already.
Gone. Cheers guys.

Oooor I could do what I'd ALREADY been doing and take literally any monster that has enough aggression (and relies on attacks that aren't hardcoded to only affect players). The code's already in place that anything spawned as friendly will attack enemies unless they're too passive to bother, regardless of what they're normally hostile to.

You could make it summon an evil multi-cooker.

In other news, a friend of mine dug up the original fallout vision statement.

Yes, it says "FALLOUT: A GURPS Post Nuclear Adventure." This is because Fallout 1 and 2 were based heavily off the rules for GURPS. They were GURPS computer games.

It used the General Universal Role Play Systems rules for general gameplay, but they needed a deeper way of handling stats and skills that wouldn't confuse the fuck out of people. Seriously, try making a character in GURPS. You'll see the similarities right away. Fallout doesn't deal in "half-points" which is nice. Half-points was a way to basically be dabbling in a certain skill, allowing you to use a skill you technically didn't have without suffering the penalties. It also allowed you an easy in if you wanted to buy the skill fully later. GURPS also doesn't have "experience" or "levels." You kind of need those for the kind of gameplay they wanted. GURPS is a heavy role play game that rewards good role playing, it isn't about the fat loot and the experience points. In the end, they decided to do a mix mash because it made sense in a gameplay standpoint. That thing you mention might have also had something to do with it too though.

Let's see, it insists on making you use their browser service for anything too large? Even better, it says it's "downloading" the file up until it hits that limit, rather than looking at the stated filesize that it can't do that. Plus the idea that it has to pre-download it before you can actually get it is suspicious as all hell.

Whenever I see the Bethesda logo in the intro to DOOM 2016, I always think "fuck you, you didn't make this shit, fuck off cunt." And now that I've played it for five hours straight instead of just a little hands on for a few minutes, my reaction to seeing their logo is even more vitriolic. Mother fuckers trying to take more than a little credit for something that's good. Id made it, Bethesda didn't. Fuck off Bethesda and learn to make better games like this more respectable company you own does. Learn to put a little fucking love and effort into what you make goddamnit. At least they aren't like the film companies, churning out a movie or two in a single franchise every year. I guess there is that.

It's fantastic. The gameplay is fast and smooth, the violence is visceral but not classlessly over the top, the environments are simple and yet interesting. Monster redesigns are a nice blend of new and old, and killing those things doesn't get old easily. The balance between gameplay and difficulty is so fine tuned that if you fail, it isn't the games fault. There's hardly any fanservice and when there is, it's small and out of the way instead of being waved in your face. It's a game that feels like it was made to be a game. It doesn't have all this stupid horse shit that most games insist on having these days. The upgrades you can get effect gameplay dramatically for the better. Overall, it's a fantastic example of what games should be. The world would be a hell of a lot more fun and less creatively bankrupt if there were more companies making games with the kind of care and attention to detail the id (not bethesda) put into DOOM 2016.

The GURPS liscense got pulled halfway through, its basically the same system, or,at least, was at the time. SPECIAL made  a bit more sense because it was, to a degree, Decimalized. Gurps is great fun to make characters in.
