I don't quite know how to play just yet but I'm gradually putting it together that I'm going to really love this game...

Only thing I'm uncertain of is how combat works, but I'll figure it out...well aside from a couple of questions.
So we get money every X hours, and the amount is determined by our economy right?
And how long research takes is affected by our science?

yes, and industry is .25 ships/ hour at base level. combat is just math based on weapon tech.

I'm really tempted to join in on this but I'm awful with any game that requires me to check up on it a few times a day over a long period of time, I'd check it for a few days and then just forget about it for a little while.

Shhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiit. My friend and ally got taken over by the Ai, so I am FUCKED. I have to fight him, as AI don't listen to reason, so any money/tech you can send would be awesome.
