Skyrim/Oblivion Mods
« on: April 28, 2015, 11:48:23 pm »
Shit... what have I done. I downloaded Skyrim, now I have almost every camping/immersion mod.

I downloaded about 12 mods now, Frostfall, Realistic Needs and Diseases, SkyUI, Enhanced First Person Camera, Wet & Cold, Wonders of Weather, Foot Prints, Sounds of Skyrim, Immersive Patrols, Organized Bandits In Skyrim, Hunterborn, Cloaks of Skyrim.

The game went from an 'okay' RPG with a really poorly executed story, to my new favorite game. After I beat most of the main quest I'm looking at downloading the Illegal Fighting mod, those two DLC-sized quest mods, and the Airship mod. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY GOOD MODS FOR THIS GAME!?

Oblivion has better mods, a better story, but the game play falls flat. Unless you get OOO and Simple needs. And they just broke so much stuff in Skyrim, like enchanting, and they flat out removed spell making in Skyrim, which makes being a mage over level 30 almost impossible in that game. Seriously though, oblivions mod community is 10 years old and still going, some really great mods.
Thanks Peri for making me question muh sexualities once again.

I started replaying Oblivion a couple days ago, and I can say that the one thing Oblivion has on Skyrim is the quests. Oooh my god, these quests. After months of playing nothing but Kill Dragur, Acquire Currency simulator, playing the kind of quests Oblivion gives you is a breath of fresh air. They range from quests like grabbing rings of weight from the bottom of wells to sniffing out cults in the woods to finding the owner of a particular vintage of wine.

The atmosphere of the game is different-in-a-good-way too, and while the gameplay is kinda wonky (and don't get me started on the character's faces), I'd have to say Oblivion has more charm than Skyrim does.

Yeah I know, I was stuck playing with Oblivion mods while everyone was enjoying Frostfall and all that. And I've played with both Simple Needs and Simple Hygiene. You wanna know how that turned out?

Cool transition to story time mode...

I went into a dungeon with little food and water since it was the beginning of the game (its that ruin you see right as soon as you leave the sewer), my guy needed to take a dump and I found out you need toilet paper to "relieve thine self in the bushes". So before heading into the ruins I crap myself, had a large stink trail that I didn't notice because I haven't left first person yet, so I was attempting to sneak up on the group when they caught a whiff of my soiled Argonian trousers and came running at me.

When you crap yourself you run slower, your stamina doesn't regenerate as fast, and it spawns more hostile animals since you smell like a lizard house. So I was barely clinging onto life, swinging madly at the three wolves and two bandits that wanted to "Make a fine pair of boots out of you lizard." After the hellish battle of Brown Pants Ridge, I bathed in the river near the ruins and headed in. I fought my way through, found some toilet paper and food.

I noticed I was running low on water, but thought I'd be quick enough to get through the dungeon, I've played this game like 5 times it won't take long right? Right? Well it did take long and I fed and satiated myself through zombie meat and dungeon water. I thought my Argonian traits would've protected me, they didn't. I contracted Bone Break Fever... twice.

So sickly, soiling myself when I ran out of paper... again, and smelling like the back end of a horses ass. I finally clawed my way out, killing and looting what was left of that necromancer. I decide that a inn isn't too far away and was just up the hill. I could take a Argonian Warrior sized crap, get a bath, and sleep tight for the night.

I was wrong. Cue me getting lost in the woods, crapping myself again (SERIOUSLY WHY DO I HAVE TO CRAP ALMOST EVERY 10 MINS... it might be because I kept eating raw meat), its now dark and I'm cold, damp, hungry, tired, and dying of thirst.

I black out in the middle of the woods from exhuastion, I wake up to five wolves, a minotaur, and a bear surround me. My character craps his pants once last time for good reason as he's torn to shreds.

I learned that I need to actually prep for an adventure when using "HARD-CORE SURVIVAL MODS", or else you'll be the most miserable lizard person around.

I'm hoping to have a similar experience in Skyrim, but without all the parts where "Interior CrocodileAligator" craps himself like he guzzled down a jar of laxative laced prunes.

Same reasons why I'm actually a bigger fan of Oblivion then Skyrim. Hell I can go back and play Oblivion in full vanilla mode, where as with Skyrim I'd have to have some mods on from players that actually know how to make an interesting game.

The quest that makes everyone who has played oblivion smile is "Whodunit". If you haven't played it, I won't spoil it, because it is the greatest quest in the game. All of the dark brotherhood quests are. Oblivion was funnier, more varied, and kinda nutso compared to Skyrim and Morrowind. Those were serious games for serious people. Oblivion has a quest where you break into a dinner party and remove everyone's clothes with a spell. Those games ended a bit ambiguously, where as in oblivion, provided you did shivering isles (which is even more nuts than the base game), you became a GOD. No real room for death there. Also, in the arena in oblivion, a guy did the math, and OVER FOUR MILLION PEOPLE have to die for you to become grand champion, accounting for everyone else arena fights before you of course.

Yeah the Dark Brotherhoood was miles better in Oblivion then in Skyrim. If Oblivion had Skyrims engine and not the mechanics it'd probably win GOTY for me for the next five years.

So, fixed enchanting, seperate pants, and spell making? With stats and classes? I would never stop playing it. I already play oblivion at least ten hours a month, without fail. Got like 2349 hours into it by now, been playing it off and on for 7 years now.

Oblivion failed for me based on one glaring aspect.  The leveling system.  I hated how the entire world leveled with you making pretty much any character progression outside of the most metagamey bullshit crappy.  Oh, and character progression in that game also sucked because of said metagamey aspects.

'There's a mod for that' really shouldn't be an excuse for poor design in the first place, and pretty much every one of Bethesda's titles since Oblivion has suffered from this.

It's why I can't legitimately justify buying a new TES or Fallout game developed by Bethesda themselves day one until they release all their DLC and the modding community has had their way with the game to fix all the half-developed systems.  Fallout: New Vegas was a better game than anything Bethesda put out right out of the box, bugginess notwithstanding and most of the DLC for it was fantastic, especially OWB.

Obscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is probably the best fixing mod in the series. Makes oblivion a helluva lot more playable. Also, never, EVER buy any of their games on console. Its even less stable!

Well in my quest for even more mods I had taken up watching MMOXREVIEWER and Brodual. To find the equal balance of stupid and serious mod videos.

Well I found a mod that turns your game into Postal 2 by adding the ability to pee anywhere. Sometimes you gotta ask yourself, "Has modding gone too far?

*insert wacky ridiculous picture here*

Oblivion mods? Martigens Monster Mod. holy shit, oblivion had bland monsters. Martigens Monster Mod fixed that right the fuck up. I also had a mod I really liked called "hillsborough estate" where you could put together a huge estate outside anvil and eventually conquer all of cyrodiil. It got pulled off the nexus for being an incredibly buggy mess with a lot of claims of stolen content leveled against its author. Cool mod though. You could make wine and all sorts of products. I usually stopped advancing in its... advancement... after buying up the blueberry farm and the bakery as I could never figure out how to do the next bit. Also CLS crafty bits. It made the game really unstable and it required OBSE, but it was a cool mod which used oblivions physics engine to do its crafting.

Off the top of my head, I cant remember anything absolutely fantastic for skyrim. Midas magic I guess. there was that big DLC quality mod, but I couldnt get it to work unfortunatly. :C

Now if you wanted mods for morrowind...
