XCOM 2 The AAR
« on: September 09, 2017, 10:47:37 am »
So remember the character pool thread? And I said I would do an After Action Report (ARR) on it so I can tell people how they horribly die, this is that thread. I will do a write up of a month by month (in game time).  You can still join the character pool if you want and die horribly eventually

Difficulty: Legend/Ironman
Options enabled:
Not Created Equal: Randomised starting stats
Hidden Potential: Random increases to stats on level up
Commanders choice: I get to pick a soldiers class when they get promoted
Beta Strike: EVERYTHING (except the lost) gets double HP
Time Turner: Increased time limits on missions, too balance out the fact fights will last much longer due to everything having more hp
Grim Horizon: Permanent Dark Events
Precision Explosives: grenade damage falls off from the centre, cover desctruction is still full radius

Month 1:
-------------------
Operation Gatecrasher: The Starting mission:
Objective: plant a bomb on a monument

None of the UM guys showed up for this mission, we start off with a Templar, none other than Nicole Knight, the soldier with the highest kill count by a long shot from my previous campaign.
I have to say Beta Strike already kinda terrifies me, bog standard ADVENT trooper has 8 HP Officers 14 HP and Sectoids have 20 HP on legend difficulty our weapons only do 3-5 damage currently.
Most people got shot up pretty badly and so will be out of action between 6-15 days until I get an infirmary to reduce heal times.

----------------------
Back at base we research modular weapons and begin building the guerilla tactics school so we can train rookies to be useful

----------------------
Operation: Iron Death
Mission Type: Destroy alien relay
Reward: Engineer

No UM deployed
Here we discover that 20 hp sectoids are made of pure bullshitium if you don't have enough flashbangs to counter their psychic bullshit
If they don't outright mind control it will leave a soldier panicked and unable to do anything next turn or disoriented reducing their already shit tier aim to even shittier tier aim and they can raise both advent and xcom corpses as zombies, zombies with 16 hp.
I really need to make more flashbangs when i get more supplies.

We lose 1 rookie who couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, with their aim I doubt they would even know what a barn IS to aim at in the first place

--------------
Operation: Night Witch
Mission Type: rescue stranded resitance agents
Sitrep: The Horde (no advent or aliens just endless swarms of the lost)
Reward: scientist and grenadier

Some idiots got lost in a strange abandoned city teeming with zombies
This should be a nice breather mission, the lost get no hp buffs from betastrike as that would nullify the headshot mechanic they have (killing a lost with a standard shot is a free action), if anyone could fucking hit them for once, seriously 90+ % and your missing multiple times in a turn. at least the lost do very little damage so it's not such a big deal.
The grenadier we have to rescue is passed out on the ground, this is the real reason we have to save these guys, they were out partying in the ruins, the grenadier got trashed enough to pass out and so his buddy called xcom as a glorified taxi.

But so many lost, so many every turn a new swarm will spawn without end

-------------------------
Back at base we get a breakthrough in reseacrh giving our rifles +1 damage and then begin resistence communications, we finish the GTS and begin traing chasovolt first so we can deploy him eventually
-------------------------

Operation: Wolf Walk
Mission Type: Haven assault

No UM deployed.
Just before the end of the month the xeno filth try attacking a resistance haven and we have to deploy to save their asses.
We encounter the Warlock for the first time this campaign, in a stroke of luck he has templars as his adversary, which means he takes bonus damage from them and guess who recovered in time for this? Motherfucking Nicole 'Glyph' Knight my Templar, you could even say Templar Knight. but dang 60 base HP with beata strike.
A stun lancer knocks 1 of my guys unconciouss (different to being killed outright) in one hit after dashing across half the map, "they are a fair and fun unit to fight" -absolutly nobody ever
Warlock hangs back most the time spamming ghost zombies that explode.
We kick his ass eventually (at least templars can't miss their main attack)and barely save the haven.

End of month 1:

We use our first resistance orders the templars give us feedback which makes alien psi attacks damage the caster, I forsee this being VERY useful.

No contact with the other 2 factions yet.

We deploy Nocam and some random rookie on a covert action to locate the skirmishers which should maybe get us Noct.

The first dark events to show up are I can only stop one and at this point I likely won't have a choice of which

I'm already gonna regret grim horizon aren't I?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd fucking drop kick an old lady, no questions asked.
I am always right when shark dicks are involved.
If it's not interrogation porn then it's poorly named and a missed opportunity.
Well, if you think about it, rape is for fun.

Wall o text ahoy!

Month 2: Begin
---------------
Choasvolt finishes his training and is ready for combat duties, i'm thinking initially building him as a medic as we badly need medics, get 1337 hacking skills later through the training center.
Purchases two more flashbangs
---------------

Operation: Frozen Slumber
Objective: sabotage psionic relay (basically the bomb missions of Enemy Unknown/Within with a new coat of paint)
Counters Dark Event Lost World

For the first time we deploy one of the UM characters, Choasvolts char is deployed on this mission. Guess who forgot the flashbangs he just made, i am a idiot. initially the fight centers around a gas station and briefly becomes a scene out of a michael bay movie, everything explodes. Our grenadier olga semeynov gets mindcontrolled and shoots choasvolt who goes into bleed out rather than die out right, the same one who shot chosvolt carries his ass out and evac the next turn so we're down 2 out of 4 guys in this mission, at least one is a sniper and the other is a ranger with phantom to act as spotter

---------
Back at base we get acess to the black market, nocam comes back with Noct just in time for a supply raid we alos get the first squad size upgrade
---------

Operation: Hammer Hand
Objective: extract supplies

We deploy Noct and Choasvolt (who made a miraclous recovery in time for this mission) together on this mission. Things go almost perfectly we get most crates and only 1 injury

--------
Resitance ring is now up and running we can finally start to contact the reapers but do do that I need some veterans so I send off Noct and choasvolt to find out where the warlock's base is.
--------

Month 2 End
------------------

Month 3 Start

I say to myself I need a engineer and intel and the Skirmishers offer just that they want us to rescue some guy.

Operation: Stone Shroud
Objective rescue resistance operative
Reward Engineer and 108 intel

We deploy Nocam on this, give him a flashbang and frag. After the initial clearout of enemies we get to the VIP and have to wait a few turns for evac so we steadly get overwhelmed by reinforcements each turn as there is 2 groups of 3-4 deployed each time and we can not clear that out.

-------------
Back at base we begin to make contact witha nearby region so we can choose which ops to go on and to get at the blacksite

-------------

Operation: Sininking Spear
Objective protect device

No UM deployed
First encouter with vipers(snek tits) and purifiers (dudes with flamethrowers and the accuracy of Ray Charles), mission goes well despite the double pod activation. Warlock Shows up and gets his ass handed to him

---------
Operation Demon Face
Haven Assault

Noct, Choasvolt and Nocam all deployed on this mission

--------
Returning from the mission it would seem Noct and Chosvolt have developed a 'bond', even XCOM ships them together OTP fuckin' confirmed

also established contact with the reapers. Got a incendinary grenade and stiletto rounds (cause bleed damage over time) from a random point of interest and got a few autospies done giving us t2 melee weapons (aside from templar)

Spider and fly dark event is now active meaning every covert op carries the risk of someone being captured
--------

End Month 3

-----------
Some thoughts

Doubled timers seem too long even with beta strike makes fights last longer than 1 turn but at the same time I feel vanilla timers would be too short unless your completly reckless
Once I get upgraded armor it will probably be though to get anyone killed
I am not taking enough screenshots to break up these giant walls of text
I'd fucking drop kick an old lady, no questions asked.

I convinced i'm getting the month number wrong so i'm going to switch to the month name/year

April 2035

time to make contact with allmost of india, the weaboo Assassin allegedly lurks in the area, for guerilla ops this month it's a tough choice of what I want as the rewards are all things we really need, an engineer, intel and a scientist. I go for the Intel to stop advent get hazmat armor

------
Operation Star Shadow
Objective Hack the workstation

Noct is deployed on this one while chaosvolt is off learning to be a 1337 hacker through a covert op, nocam is also off on a covert op to reduce the avatar progress

We bring our new reaper out on this and go for a disastorous triple pod activation by going michael bay on the first pod we see, tossing a claymore and detonating it with a grenade, destroying half a train and almost revealing the entire map. Noct gets mindcontroled and almost gets Templar Knight killed by stunning her (The Tier 2 secondary on skirmishers has a gurantee stun) letting the ayys shoot her, saved only by her +6hp PCS. Good job Noct! This is the future I chose for not enough flashbangs.

-----------
Operation Moon God
Objective Raid the supply train
Sitrep: Show Of Force (only ADVENT units no aliens, aside from the chosen apparently)

Noct is deployed on this one to help pick up our order from Ayymazon Prime, apparently they don't deliver to the Avenger directly. We have our first encounter with the weeabooAssassin, extra damage from close range attacks and weak to skirmishers like Noct, Noct should be quite strong against her using wrath to pull himself to her to punch and then shoot in the face, surprisingly she doesn't have shadowstep because unlike the other 2 Chosen she will charge right at you from the start instead of staying way back spamming a couple of abilities. The weeaboo Assassin got her ass kicked Noct's stiletto rounds proved to be great at countering her regeneration.

----------
Returning to base Noct is apparently le tired of killing aliens and takes some time off
----------
Operation Witch Star
Objective Extract VIP
Reward scientist and intel

We get a request from Mr. Baldy McCouncildude to save some lab coats ass, considering we are in short supply of scientists we deploy our finest rookies, with noct being tired and chaosvolt and nocam off doing covert Ops and wilson not recruited yet. No UM are deployed. Our first Encounter with mutons. Nobody comes out of this one looking pretty one guy had to be left behind bleeding out and eventually dies everyone else got wounded.

-------
Back at base we recruit wilson and begin training him to be a useful member of the team
-------

Operation Swift Cobra
Haven Assault

Even though Noct and Knight are both tired I force them on this mission we need some vaguely useful soldiers like Noct. So many stun lancers and in one brave stun lancer channels his bullshit into his gun instead of his sword and performs act of such bullshit that a missed shot on a civilian destroys a chunk of the floor of the building they were hiding in building killing 4 civilians in 1 shot.

Noct ends the mission with a bang by hooking a purfier to him and then stabbing him causing him to explode in his face. This mission caused Noct to become shaken meaning time off for therapy and shit and to discuss his petrifying fear of being tased.

-----
Back at base we finish a power relay and begin more excavations, Not decided on weather to go for a proving grounds next or get a comms station.
On one hand we need to start contacting more regions but on the other the proving grounds gives useful projects, like building new grenade and ammo types or build killer robots.
We purchase info on how to build basic magnetic weapons off the black market reducing our research time on them when we begin researching them
-----

End April 2035
-----------

May 2035

Operation Strom Dragon
Objective protect device
Sitrep: psionic storm (psionic aliens/advent units) and The Lost

Anyway with all UM personel injured/training or off on a covert mission there are none to deploy on this, it's time for the rookie brigade! With the amount of sectoids and priest on this I don't think theres enough flashbangs in the world to deal with this psychic bullshit. Blowing up 2 cars may not have been the smartest move ever when explosions summon even more lost. and it turns out flashbangs also count as an explosion for summoning more lost. So. Many. Lost.
It takes the best part of forever but eventually the tide of lost stops allowing us to mop up the lost and move on to finish off the rest of the ayys. The only reason this mission succeded I reckon is the double HP also applying to the objective even at the 3 damage a turn they were doing to it with how long we got bogged down with the horde, it would most likely be destroyed at vanilla values. 91% to kill off the last enemy and finish the mission? You better believe that missed.

-----
Back at base Nocam returns with a scientist in tow and shortly after we finish plated armor research and get a heavy armor breakthrough (+1 hp from the heavy armors like the EXO and WAR suits) coincidence? probably.
One room is finished being cleared of debris which gives some supplies but not enough to buy the new armour and decide on a comms room so we can contact more regions.
Wilson finishes training and is ready to die in blaze a of glory or unceremoniously either one kill some aliens.
The Warlock is getting very close to max knowledge and starting a base defense mission, ehich would suck this early
We also get light armor breakthrough for +1hp. Definitly the scientist. They are some sort armour making prodigy cause they see what no else does "why don't stick more alloy plates on it?" and they are hailed a genius.
We also get another scientist from a point of interest, maybe research will get done at a resonable pace now
----
End of May 2035

Our resistance orders at the end of the month
I'd fucking drop kick an old lady, no questions asked.
I am always right when shark dicks are involved.

Only like that one time with the mindcontrolled dude that almost killed you, you've been spending most of your time on covert op's which are generally safe raising your hacking stat think you got injured from one, but that's pure RNG no control over that other than not sending you. I'll be using you more S.O.O.N

I keep going from being useful to whinny bitch multiple times in this...

June 2035

We make contact with the West Asia region. Noct recovers and is sent of on a covert action to reduce the cost of building the proving ground and increase his aim a bit.
We buy tier 2 gauntlets for the Templar

Operation: Dark Thorn

We deploy wilson and nocam on this one to assassinate a ADVENT field commander our first encounter with shieldbearers, these cunts deploy a shield that gives an extra 3hp to nearby enemies.
Initially we set up on the roof of a building to ambush the next turn this goes awry naturally as a patrol climbs up and reveal us activating 3 pods. The Warlock shows his ugly face to try and stop us.
a pitched battle lasting seemingly forever ensues as all those shields go up making already tanky enemies even tankier
Once Nocam runs out of nades to lob and forced to rely on his cannon he demonstrates the aiming skills of Helen Keller. He's gonna need a scope and/or aim pcs whenever we get those, so he can maybe hit the broadside of a barn or even SEE the barn at least grenades don't rely on aim.

-----
Back at base we finally have the resources to build tier 2 armor fucking up almost all customization, thanks Anarchy's children "your a great DLC and every customisation option is great"-absolutly nobody
admittingly there are some nice pieces like non-shiny power armor and some of the helms are okay but the rest is just utter trash. We spend a hour literally just customising the entire barracks to not look stupid.

-----

Operation Forgotten Empire

Avatar project (basically a doomclock once the meter is full you have a certain amount of time to knock it down a bit before it's instant game over) is pretty high as it is we most definitly don't want them to add another 2 blocks to it's progress.

We send -Helen Keller- Nocam and Chaosvolt out on this one, Noct got injured in his covert op (good job you strained a muscle and are crying like a bitch about it) . wilson was injured in his first mission and is still getting pieced together again with duct tape.
We have our first encounter with specters, a new enemy type in WOTC that knocks out a soldier and creates a copy of them with the same stats and skills, once the specter or copy is dead the soldier wakes back up or alternatively use a specialist's (like chaosvolt) revival protocol skill on them.

In a surprise turn of events -Helen Keller- Nocam kills something, with his gun, instead of lobing nades at everything that moves, the spectre copies -Helen Keller- Nocam, it'll be fine right? nocam has garbage aim. It copies grenades, even used ones, shadow nocam lobs an incendinary 'nade at chaosvolt
who later gets mindcontrolled . We free Chaosvolt from mindcontrol before he can do anything to fuck us over. Turns out spectres have a life steal ability that panics guys, making this guy a pain in the arse to kill with his invisibility and running away then decloaking to lifesteal and panic a guy. shadowcam takes pot shots at our sniper who is in high cover on high ground misssing every single one, for once nocams poor accuracy is actually a good thing. Eventually Chaosvolt (2nd most accurate of the Um guys after wilson) puts the spectre the fuck down bringing back Helen Keller Nocam.

On the positive side nocam being out several turns means he still has his flashbang to help deal with a pod of -snektits- vipers
I find myself really wishing I had tier 2 weapons right about now. Chaosvolt hacks the objective and those covert ops to improve his hacking already begins to pay off as we get a bonus from the chest increasing region income by 25 supplies

-----
We don't have much time back at base before we get another guerilla op, wilson is finished being duct taped together and so is the only UM available for this one as everyone else is busy getting their internal organs internal again.
-----

Operation Frost Fall

Rookie brigade hype (plus wilson)! well more the not-quite rookie brigade most them are somewhat leveled, theres lost on this mission which means endless fucking hordes of the things every other turn and witht he aim demonstrated by our soldiers this will only take the better part of forever. Spectres are now officially worse than stuns lancer, they can run half the map after reveal and are guranteed to knock out one guy unlike lancers where it's chance it will just miss or disorient. Not only that but your down one guy and gain 1 extra enemy you have to deal with. We pick up a new recruit in the mission I think he'll fit right in with XCOM given his first shot is a 99% to hit 100% to miss . at least 2 out of the 3 guys we need to rescue from the zombie horde are awake and can fight with us unlike last time where a scientist was with a passed out escourt.

Apparently the mission is somehow a failure, we rescued everyone who we came out to rescue and the mission was an evac mission rather than eliminate all enemies, and we got none of the reward? has to be a bug.

--------
Back at base
We finish our light armor breakthrough and get a couple of instant autopsies done and begin mag weapons which we sorely need, we get a new Templar recruit and begin searching for a way in to the warlocks base, hopefully we can strike his base before he strikes ours.
I discover that the poster about XCOm shipping noct and chaosvolt in on display in the bar
---------

Operation Blinding Prophet

We deploy -Helen Keller- Nocam and Noct on this one to abduct a enemy VIP at the request of Baldy McCouncildude. We set up an ambush opening up on a viper and 2 sectoids with an incendiary grenade, the guy who was going to be our scout since he keeps concealment after others have been revealed, gets revealed and mindcontrolled in the one turn and flashbangs half the squad, its slightly annoying more than anything else, we encounter turrets for the first time and they're already the upgraded ones. A Cancer Lancer Stun Lancer knocks  out our new Templar in one fucking hit.
(A real nice balanced unit, charge half the map to 1 hko a guy)

We have no way of waking them back up in this mission so someone will have to haul his ass over to the evac zone which means 2 people are on ass hauling duties today as one will need to carry the VIP as well.
Noct didn't have to roll for panic on seeing the stun lancer for some reason.  Nocam hauls the VIPs ass and ropes out ahead of the rest of the squad while the rest of the squad picks off what they can while running towards evac.

----
Back at base we finish clearing out some debris and begin building the proving ground, this will give us access to a bunch of useful stuff, like grenade and ammo types killer robots and more
The avatar project is getting dangerously close to finishing, it is time to contact the East Europe region to strike the facility there however this facility is guraded by a ruler (alien hunters DLC) which is going to be a major pain to deal with on beta strike, they already have a mountain of HP and get an action for every action you take. we also have the Blacksite i'm going to have to go sooner than I'd like, usually I'd wait til I have the skulljack available and do blacksite + codex in the one mission to do knock back the avatar project 2-3 points in one mission
----

End of June 2035

I'd fucking drop kick an old lady, no questions asked.

So I'm actually useful when I'm not being mind-controlled or on fire, amazing.

I am abandoning this campaign, something is far too buggy, either the mods im using or the DLC, there's just way too many crashes happening. Sometimes using console commands to restart the level works sometimes save scumming (with a back up save) to before a mission for a new map as i'm suspecting some map parts are buggy as shit, play it again and hope it doesn't crash works. Verifying game files.
None of the fixes seem to be working this time round

To show off how many here is the log folder for xcom 2

compare it to a just as if not even more heavily modded base game for over a year

It was fun while it lasted

I'd fucking drop kick an old lady, no questions asked.
I am always right when shark dicks are involved.
If it's not interrogation porn then it's poorly named and a missed opportunity.
Well, if you think about it, rape is for fun.
if utterly mad was any gayer, i'd shop here
I'd rather circumcise myself in a public place.
Eh, I don't really find anyone's sig too unreasonable. Though Caconym's is almost unreasonable
