The Rastal (PC/NPC Race)
« on: December 12, 2016, 02:46:32 am »

Name: Rastal
Designation: Sentient Humanoid
Homeworld: Kallisti
Language: Rastali, but galactic basic is understood by many
Average height of adults: 6 feet
Skin color: varies, generally gloden-tan
Hair color: varies
Breathes: Air-like atmospheres

Strengths:

A completely unified society, with concise, agree upon goals. Adaptable and innovative on an individual level. The rigid, state controlled economic system allows for rapid production of specific goods.

Weaknesses:

Relatively frail, no natural weapons. A rigid, bureaucratic society causes adaptability and and innovation on a racial level to be somewhat stagnant unless urgently required. The rigid, state controlled economic system generally does not focus on basic consumer goods and general quality of life is not considered a galactic benchmark.

Distinctions:

Average Lifespan: Up to 120 years on well developed worlds. Generally half that on newer colonies.
Estimated Population: Approximately 150 billion across two dozen systems.
Diet: Omnivorous
Communication: Verbal and written. Several dialects, though all speak and write common Rastali, and most at least speak Galactic Basic
Culture: While local cultures vary considerably depending on location, most individuality and uniqueness is somewhat inherently suppressed by the nature of their society, which focuses fully on achieving goals for the betterment of all the Rastal rather than for personal gain or the sake of individual achievement. As of such, most Rastal share many cultural elements regardless of location or generation.

Technology level: Roughly on par with that of Humanity. While the Rastal have been moving among the stars for far longer, they tend to only make significant technological advances when it is required or convenient rather than when it is possible. At present, they are marginally more advanced than mankind in most areas, but it is likely that the Terrans will surpass them in the next 30-50 years.

General behaviour: There is not one standard, expected behaviour amongst Rastals on an individual level, though they are typically highly indoctrinated in their ways of thinking.

Appearance:

While specific appearance varies considerably based on a variety of factors, the basic features of the Rastal are strikingly similar to those of humanity. One of the most immediately noticeable difference are larger eyes, which, although not significantly out of proportion relative to human eyes, are large enough to seem "unsettling" to many humans, with iris color generally ranging into shades not found in natural human eyes. Beyond this, the Rastal are, on average, of a slightly stockier build than humans, and also generally have darker skin tones, with the majority having light brown or "golden-tan" coloring.

The external similarities are generally credited to the Rastal being descended from primates, much like humanity, and the general conditions of Kallisti being very similar to those found on earth. It has not escaped the notice of human researchers that the Rastal share even more similarities with projections of how humanity may look after several hundred years of space travel and evolution. Despite the similarities, internal physiology is radically different in layout, though basic organ functions would appear to be roughly the same.

History:

The closest comparison one can make for the Rastal is between them and mankind - they have similar physiologies, both being descended from primates, they share similar capabilities, and their pre-space history is remarkably similar.

Where the most important difference lays is in their experiences directly before and during the transition to space-fairing societies, and the resulting outlook on the galaxy that it has left them with.

Wheras humanity's leap to the stars was motivated and led by private corporations, the initial forays of the Rastal came directly after a global war that resulted in the victors uniting the species under a single government, and pushing out into space under the guise of benefiting everyone. While humanity's current motivations are typically more driven by profit than any particular goal, the Rastal seek resources and living space to improve life for all their people, and are politically motivated by the ideal that they can spread their message of unity to other races, making the galaxy a better place.

Of course, harsh reality never lives up to sparkling ideals, and while the goal may be noble and the effort virtuous in the minds of the majority of the population, much of the method of sharing their vision for a unified galaxy consists of military intervention and forceful conversion. Much like mankind's near-brainwashed level of consumer culture, Rastal culture is filled with propaganda on how utopian the society is, and dissent is generally not tolerated. The stark differences between the two species has caused them to ignore their commonalities, and both sides view the other as something of a diametrically opposed evil. This has caused a decade long cold war, virtually starting at first contact.

All Rastal industry and research is state-sponsored, and collectivised. While this often allows for surprisingly efficient production, and at one point caused greatly accelerated technical development, it also is not overly supportive of current innovation or advancement. Though they experience a surge forward here and there every few years, more out of necessity than anything, their development level is often rather stagnant.

As mentioned, the Rastal have been a space-faring society for several centuries, and accordingly have a fairly sizeable area of control and influence, with 20-30 systems in their control. Their neighbours typically view them as one of the most, if not the most significant threat to their self-determination and continued survival, a reputation which is well justified as the Rastal are presently one of the most, if not the most numerous species in the galaxy, as well as highly expansionist. At present, they have been prevented from further aggressive action mainly through the actions of the Norenfal, their direct neighbours towards the galactic center. While not having a population or military significantly larger than that of humanity, the Norenfal are extremely technologically advanced, and are possibly the only race to have fought the Rastal to something resembling defeat in recorded history. A state of cold war currently exists between the two, which has diverted enough of the Rastal manpower to prevent them from expanding into the territory of their two other neighbouring species - humanity, and the Talen.

The final border of Rastal space extends into the increasingly empty Galactic Rim, and is the present location of several colonization efforts.

Notable Player-Characters:

Intent: To spread the greatness (vileness?) of space communism, and provide an interesting opponent for mankind that still makes for a feasible PC race.

Approved.
There is probably no more terrible instance of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man — with human flesh.

Updated to include a rough physical description. It sucks pretty hard because I didn't actually put any thought into this when I first made them and didn't intend to develop them far enough for one to be important.

Besides the general "future human" looks, the only other things I could think of were like Planet of the Apes apes from the Heston movie, some kind of elf thing, or "pretty much humans with blue skin", all of which are just as lame in many ways.
Gone. Cheers guys.
