It brokened again, I tracked down the reason. It's the radium theme, if you leave it on and quit, it automatically picks it and doesnt work anymore.
Oh yeah, radium randomly stopped working for me too. It was a while before I managed to get lucky and part of the theme changing box showed up and I was able to switch it.
