Books, Comics and more
« on: April 21, 2015, 12:09:45 am »
pretty much just a discussion of Books and other such media.

Reading wise I primarily read Star Wars, Star Trek, and then pretty much whatever I find interesting at my local(not really local) half price books.
Comic wise I really just read a handful of webcomics. Manly guys doing manly things, Drmcninja, and String Theory Comic, and The White-Board being my four favorites.

I read a lot. My favorite books are the Redwall books, all 24ish of them. Good world, food descriptions, funny characters, goofy moments and stereotypes, incredibly graphic violence and death, no aversion to killing and maiming central characters (one book had a badger lord be blinded and crippled in battle, the main character suffer permanent leg damage, the villain being BLUDGEONED TO DEATH WITH ONE OF HIS OWN SOLDIERS, and a really sad Squirrel death.). Combine that with a series of neat callbacks and mythology, and you have a children's book series that is far better than woodland animals living in a red building has any right to be. Oh, and yeah, this is sold as a children's book series.....

Favourite Book series: The Culture
Favourite from that series: Excession (It was the first one I read, I love the focus on the Minds)

Other book series I like:
The Lost Fleet (Probably one of the most realistic depictions of space battles there is, still on going with the "beyond the frontier" spinoff but it's starting to get a little silly)

Currently reading:
Hyperion

Terry Pratchett's Discword is without a single doubt my favourite book series, with my favourite books from that probably being the Nac Mac Feegle books. (Tiny Scottish Faeries)
Hat Full of Sky was the first one I ever read, my dad bought it for me when I was in hospital and I've been determined to collect every single Discworld book since then, I do have quite a few of them.

My outright favourite book that I own though would have to be my Lord of The Rings book, it's also one of the largest books I own.

At the minute I'm reading two Discworld books I recently got, Mort and Witches Abroad.

Since this is the one for books, anybody here read Roadside Picnic? Kind of difficult to find in english, but its an interesting read.
One of my favorite book series was dark tower. There were some parts of that series that really brought out the feels.
And as for comics, Im about one hundred or so issues into knights of the dinner table. Wanted to get them in physical form, but the first ten or so issues are kind of expensive.

Reviving the topic with this: Have any of you guys read the book John Dies at the End? It is a fantastic book.
Right now I am reading the sequel This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude Don't Touch It. The humor is great, the absurdity of things is great, and the alien design is creepily great.

Warning: There is a LOT of gore. It might not be extremely detailed but there is a lot, like bodies exploding into flying alien worms of literally pure evil. There was also a hallucination type thing in which the McDonald's clown was eating his intestine, so if you are real sensitive to gore then be wary.
It is still an awesome book though and was a great read. Even my English teacher has read it and says it's great. If not there is also a movie for John Dies at the End, and I hear it was pretty good and follows the story well.

Let me just give you some snippets from both John Dies at the End and This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude Don't Touch It (Man, I just love saying the full title.)

Spoiler: A few from John Dies at the End (hover to show)

Ok, I don't even watch MLP, but I have REALLY been enjoying reading this.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic News, Brony and bronies, my little pony merchandise, pony art, pony music, pony media
equestriadaily.com

So nice to see all of the innocence lost and brutalized underneath a thick layer of violence and gore. This out does FO3 when it comes to gore. Think about that.

reading DF succession games...
Johannes Cabal is a good series.
and of course, Uncle Johns Bathroom Readers. Contrary to the title, you do not need to be in the bathroom to read them.
