Title: Battletech Thread
Post by: Perigrin on May 03, 2015, 11:15:11 pm
A thread for talking about the greatest 'mech franchise ever. Lets start with favorite 'mechs for each weight class.
Light: Urbanmech. Its adorable, cheap, and has a very big gun. I once killed a Thor, a MadCat, and a Shadow Hawk all at once with one of these (Crited the Thor in the Pilot, three center torso shots with an AC/20 to the Shadow Hawk, removed all of the MadCat's weapons fairly quick (noob opponent customized his omnimech to have all of the weapons in the arms, like 4 ERPPC's, put the rest in heat sinks. Poor guy didn't think of spreading it out.)
Medium: Uziel. Its well armed, fast, and cool looking. Once one hit a Daishi with one (C O C K PIT SHOTS ALL DAY ERRY DAY!)
Heavy: Warhammer. Its like a mega Uziel. PPC's, missiles, all the armor you need, what's not to like?
Assault: Grand Titan. Otherwise known as the Atlas skull stomper. A fuckton of Pulse lasers, good armor, good speed, badass looking as hell. Got some good variants, and was my main mech in a campaign game after I lucked out and managed to kill and salvage it while in a Commando. I was supposed to run, killed it with a Death From Above to the face, ruined the GM's planned Challenge curve.

While I'm less familiar with the IS names for Clan 'mechs, I'll probably try to stick to using them for simplicities sake.

MADCATS ALL DAY E'RRY DAY

Ullers are honestly one of my favourite light Clan 'mechs, either them or Cougars, I know they're not the best light 'mechs around though
Light IS 'mech is without absolutely any question the Raven, simply because I love the design and the support/intel focus.
I ****ing hate Firestarters and Urbanmechs.

I don't really like very many Medium 'Mechs, none that I could class as a favourite.

Favourite Heavy 'mech is unquestionably the Mad Cat, and any of it's varients, I don't even think I'd have to explain that, it's such a good 'mech.
Loki's are also pretty okay, it's fun but not really that good, it's just an interesting, and somewhat confusing, 'mech.

Favourite Assault is possibly the Fafnir, simply because those heavy gauss rifles will **** your day up.

Also killing a Thor in an Urbanmech shows how fucking stupid they can be sometimes, I hate them so fucking much.

Let's see...

Light Mech: Flea. Can't touch this.
Medium Mech: Centurion
Heavy Mech: TOO MANY TO POST. Seriously I like a lot of em.
Super Big F.ucking Mech: Zeus and the Atlas MKIII.

I totally forgot Centurions existed, I ****in love Centurions.

I'm wondering why they never added an option to play football with Fleas , with the pilot still inside while in larger Heavy/Assault mechs, you could totally kick them around with no problem.

Yeah, the Thor has a bit of a rep with my group for easily being a "retard 'mech". Its big, flashy, and kinda useless. Also, the MadCat mkIII is a medium mech. Its a 3100 mech though.......
also, in one of our campaigns I used clan weapons to refit an Urbanmech. A Clan Gauss Rifle, a load of ammo, Ferro Fibrous armor, and two IS medium lasers is a deadly cocktail. Also, the Fafnir is cool, but way more expensive (point and cbill wise) than most other mechs.

I feel a little silly saying how much I like Thors, I was talking about my hatred for Urbanmechs, also for forgetting there was a medium MadCat variant.

The fafnir is expensive as **** but I generally feel like its worth it in most situations that you'd use it for, I see it more as a defensive mech though, a last line defensive mech where you're forced to get close to it.

How dare you defile glorious Clan weapons with your goddamn Urbanmech.

Well, I misunderstood you. The Thor is cool, but people get too confident. Like, yeah you are the "Thunder of the Gods", but you are NOT a brawler with those long range weapons. Guys taking PPC's and Gauss Rifles and then proceeding to stand two hex's away pisses me off. I just call the Thor the stupid mech because in my experience people don't know how to use Omni mechs properly. Its best used to vary your weapons with the superior clan guns, not to put 6 PPC's on one Thor. Goddam. Also, you are forgetting that the clans have a variant of the urbanmech for garrison forces. Also, on topic, how do you feel about Boating? Its good with some weapons, terrible with others.

1120. Even if I’m in charge I can’t order the Assault Lance to perform West Side Story dance routines.

Wait, it wasnt a Thor, it was a Loki. The Loki is the ridiculously fragile weapon boat, not the Thor. Sorry for the confusion.
Title: Re: Battletech Thread
Post by: Six on May 04, 2015, 02:45:16 pm
I actually didn't know Clan had a varient of the Urbanmech, I haven't been heavily into Battletech for a little while so there's either a lot I didn't learn or I've forgotten.

I think people get confused on how to use Gauss Rifles and use them in brawler mechs because they do a **** ton of damage and because the Heavy Gauss Rifle carries traits of a brawler weapon with it's shotgun like damage dropoff and lends itself incredibly well to a devastating alpha strike at close range(Which I'm remembering is a bad idea with Heavy Gauss Rifles for some reason), although IIRC it performs best at medium range most of the time.

Boating is sort of okay, as long as you keep a backup weapon, for ammo using boats at least, if you use a Catapult as an LRM Boat for example, which is exactly what it's built for (and becomes the most annoying thing in the universe with Streak SRMs) then you usually keep at least a laser on there, because if you're not using streak missiles, I'm just gonna bait you to waste all your ammo and then kill you with the lightest mech I can.

Thors are amazing, I used to confuse them with Lokis until I remembered specifically that Loki in mythos is quite odd, and so are Loki mechs. Loki's can be ****ing horrifying to run across with a real good pilot though, but their lack of armour means they're only dangerous for a few seconds, after that you've either stripped the weapons out or outright killed them.
Back in Mechcommander I used to have a liking for Lokis one playthrough, until I kept having all their weapons stripped out by mechs way lighter than them, and they weren't faring well against anything that could match them.

I disagree, Catapults ARE brawlers if you put enough SRMs in them and Assault mechs ARE magical girls if you put enough tutus on them!

Seriously I'm usually a little scared of Catapults full of SRMs, that alpha strike damage is usually enough to fuck you up, sure you'll probably kill the Catapult after but any friends it had are going to absolutely ruin you, and if they do that before you kill the Catapult then it's free to go pull that shit on some other poor bastard.

"Cappellan Ingenuity: The ability to lose battles to Davion forces in new and implausible ways"

We should play a game. Rejected clan names! Like, you know how all clans are named after an animal, so here we go. I am copying this from the Battletech forums directly.

Clan Incontinent Gorilla- A name come up with apparently by Andery Kerensky, during the initial trials for a spot in the 800. While watching a large scale battle, Andery noticed a group of warriors, who rushed their opponents and unleashed a furious barrage of physical attacks, including instances of attempting to twist and enemy battlemech's head off, kicking a leg clean off a mech and pummeling that very mech about the head and torso with it, numerous Death From Above attacks with varying success, and in one case what appeared to be a German Suplex applied to a Wasp by a Black Knight. Knowing that such "dishonorable" tactics would essentially remove them from consideration, Andery suggested to Nicolas he relent and place these warriors in a clan called Clan Incontinent Gorilla. When asked why that name, Andery is said have responded, "Because they are going (expletive deleted) on everyone out there."

76: No more discussion on a gun that shoots Urbanmechs.
77: No more discussion on the topic of Mech Buttsecks.
78: Jade Falcons only fall for the Candygram once.
79: Flamers are not good cigarette lighters, and it is mean to tell the noobies that they are.
80: Do NOT talk about Clan Wolverine.

A citizen of the Inner Sphere may ask, "What did the Clans ever do for us?" "Well," a citizen of the Barrens might answer, "the sanitation, the medicine, education, viniculture, public order, irrigation, roads, the freshwater system, public health, oh and peace."

"In a one-on-one battle with another heavy Battle Mech - assuming equally skilled Mechwarriors - conventional wisdom is that the Black Knight will always triumph."

Found some python references in some battletech sourcebooks.

Yeah, they spent 6 monthes redrawing the things, and got as close as they legally could to the originals. And, since they are starting a kick starter for a new battletech strategy game within the next few months, we can finally have the things in games again.
