Guns and shit (Apa's random crap thread)
« on: August 30, 2016, 04:15:13 pm »
I'm not really all that artistic like most of the people here, but I figured I'd share this for the other gun guys.

So, sometimes I get a little free time at work in the shop, which is nice. Recently, I've begun playing around with a Ruger SR1911 I've had kicking around for a couple years. I've built and rebuilt a few 1911s, but never done much in depth stuff, just swapping bits here and there.

This one, I've decided to go full out on. It started off looking kinda like this:

First step was to yank the slide release. It got replaced with a forged Norinco - they aren't great, but are HUGE. I have small hands and am left-handed, and this is the only thing big enough that I can consistently hit it with my index finger. Next, the mag release was taken down a bit, and recheckered. Looks like the factory, but is just a bit shorter so I don't accidentally hit that one. Then the safety. Some decent Wilson Combat ambis go in - low profile since I've never really used safeties, as you can't pack a gun around here.

Factory Novaks were yanked and replaced with Tru-Glo stuff, thrice actually. Funny story, I was busy doing other shit and had someone else here put in the first two pairs. They both fell out within about 25 rounds. Somewhere out in the dirt, there's $600 worth of glow in the dark gun sights. Third time, I did it myself, and they're still there, thankfully. For the record, tritium sights are kind of a waste of money even when they don't fall out - I've got a 12 ga for home defense if the 80 year old woman next door decides to try to murder me, and besides whipping around the house with this thing and having the glows make me feel all badass, they are kinda pointless.

Grips were originally swapped with some Pachmayer American Legends with a wrap, which got lost in the shop somewhere when I did the next step. So, it's got grippers for now, which are likely gonna get chucked in favor of some VZ grips.

And re-profiling will need to happen. I was digging around in a bin upstairs, and stumbled on a jig for bobtailing 1911s. This is badass, as my little hands don't fit the standard GOVT sized guns as well as most of my other pistols. So into the chopping block it went. Considering I'd never done one before, it turned out ok. I used an Ed Brown mainspring housing that just happened to be around - it's pretty super aggressive, which is good.

Finally, a bit of trigger tweaking, a little polishing here and there, and this is what I've got now:

And one with the grippers on it, cause why not. As I said, I didn't bother to profile them since I can't find my scissors and plan on swapping them in the next week or two for something nicer.

Spoiler (hover to show)

For some reason, TinyPic insists that this is the picture I uploaded. So here's a direct link to that one instead. Which doesn't work either. I don't know. Picture that with rubber finger groove grips on it.

Still to do:

1. Replace those grips. I'm thinking some VZ Operators in tiger stripe, or maybe some Wilsons.
2. Laser engraving. I'm kinda undecided on it, but I have this handy laser engraver here. I'm thinking either grip medallion inserts, or where the ruger logo is now - might put this there, so that it will match my discordian themed tattoos. I might not, too. Depends what color it ends up being. Medallions would likely go best with the "theme" here, but I'm not sure if I'll find time to make them.
3. Cerakoting. I've gotten everything all tightened up, which was a mistake, as I'd still like to cerakote at least part of it. I'm thinking a nice, simple, two tone flat black with the slide, kind of like this. Those are the same type grips that were originally on it, and might end up going back on it if I skip step 1 and can find them.
4. Cerakote the magazine baseplates. I've got a color scheme I've used forever for the one handgun that I do leave at home for my wife, so that she knows which ones have bullets that will go through the wall and kill the kids, and which ones are frangible, should she ever decide to lose it and shoot the house up. Black for FMJ, gold for HP, and blue for frangibles. I have a million 1911 mags around and don't usually leave this one at home, so I might not bother with this.
5. Replace the grip screws with these. Cause why the fuck not.

After this project is done, it's on to learning how to sew and making a holster for this motherfucker:

And if you fellas insist on some "art", here's a drawing I did of some customer who kept me on the phone for an hour and a half. I was running out of shit to scribble well before the call was over.

Best fucking drawing ever.

So here's my question:

What would you say is the most memorable thing that you've done in your life so far?

And because I'm me (and I do this on every AMA) How big yo dick.
There is probably no more terrible instance of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man — with human flesh.

But this isn't my AMA! Lulz.

Still, I'll give you a very long answer, because that's a cool question and I'm really bored and stuck at work.

Hrm. Well, probably the objectively memorable thing I did was living in a cabin in the middle of the woods for a year. It was kinda different - my ex-wife and I ran a little grow op out there, and it was literally in the middle of nowhere, no power (except an old gen set, like, way older than me, that we gave up on in the first week), no running water, and most of the stuff we ate we either shot or grew. So that was pretty memorable.

Also traveled alot, mostly backpacking and kinda vagabonding around. It's not particularly memorable because I was pretty fucked up for most of it and can't remember half of it. I distinctly remember going through Montana or Wyoming one time, and see all these cars lined up on cinder blocks in a guy's yard. At the end of the line was this huge Sikorsky S-61, also on cinder blocks. It's probably the thing that sticks out most in my memory from that era of my life, despite having traveled a few continents and spent alot of time sleeping on beaches and shit. I don't know why.

Probably the most memorable terrible thing I did is as follows, which I've copied and pasted from the WT forums since I'm not writing it twice:

Spoiler:  It's LONG (hover to show)

So, that's how I literally killed a house armed with nothing but a box of cats.

All that shit said though, the thing I find most memorable, objectivity or "gee, that's cool" aside is having my kid. Admittedly my ex-wiffle did most of the work, but she's just such an awesome little person. It's hard to describe, but it changed my life and it's pretty cool.

My dick is bigger than the barrel on the 1911, but smaller than the barrel on the walker.
Gone. Cheers guys.

Double post because it's my random crap thread.

Not in person, but I've seen videos of glocks melt. I've seen quite a few guns explode though.
Gone. Cheers guys.

Thanks! I used to have a pair, but they weigh like 4 or 5 lbs each and would pull my pants down during shoots. They honestly looked alot smaller in the picture before I ordered them. So just one now. That one is a Walker Colt replica - the Walker was the most powerful pistol in the world for around 100 years, and I can tell you anecdotally that a full charge will pop a hole through the armor of a UH-1 helicopter from about 25 yards. It's certainly a good gun for a lich, haha.

Here's a few more from my collection that I happen to have at work right now that you might like if you're a wheelgun guy. Nothing too remarkable anymore (I've sold most of my guns since I got married and shit), but still some stuff you might find neat.

My Ruger GP-100. I'm honestly more of a semi guy, but I love this thing. It will feature later in this thread once I get a bit of work done on it that I've been putting off forever. I've got a 4 1/4 inch new model here someplace too, but it's kinda ugly.

Once opon a time, I had half a dozen cowboy guns. Then I realized I only have two hands and don't shoot any of them outside of CASS stuff anyway. So I kept these two - one is a .357 Ruger Vaquero Bisley special edition that fits more like a 1911, so is likeable. The other one is just a cheap Pietta .45, but has pretty engraving.

Just bought these two and the case. I don't really want either of them, but buddy only wanted a couple hundred bucks, so they'll flip profitably. The Pietta Navy has had a fuckload of stuff done to it (not by me). The other one is a Remington 1858, probably the best blackpowder gun ever invented.

This is just a shitty little Enfield. I had the full collection of these and the Webleys at one point, but just sold them all. This one is sold to someone too, but is still at the store for some reason.

Yay gun porn!

Gone. Cheers guys.

I like revolvers. There's something about their simplicity and elegance that speaks to me. Especially the ones with a long profile, like that Walker or the Remington 1858.

>Revolvers

I'm a gun guy, despite not personally owning any, and gunporn's a pretty big part of what I do online. And revolvers are like, 80% of the gunporn that I look at. SO YEAH. I LIKE REVOLVERS. Already have a few picked out that I'ma get once I've got a bit of cash that's actually mine.

Uberti Walkers run for something like $480 CDN (so like $25 for you guys or whatever), and are really cheap to shoot. I pay something like $40 CDN for a pound of power (which at a max charge of 60 grains will give me something like 115 shots), $15 for 100 balls, and $11 for 100 caps. It's seriously one of the cheapest non-9mm guns per shot I think I own, at $0.66 cents a shot or so (which now, doing the math, makes me realize how much money I blow through on ammo in a year, gads), and is just fucking mindblowingly fun to shoot - fire and smoke and all kinds of chaos spew forth from it. I'd highly recommend one.

Holy shit, $369 for Uberti Colt 1849 pocket revolvers. And $459 for the Walker in American dollars, to be exact. That's pretty awesome.

AND $369 FOR THE FUCKING REMINGTON TOO?!

I'd suggest Navy models over the pockets. .31 balls are hard to find, at least here. Also, if you get the Wells Fargo version of the pocket, you'll need to buy a bunch of other crap just to load it.
Gone. Cheers guys.

If you've got the right tools, I imagine you can make your own though. I guess a standard hand loader just isn't going to do it though if your firing balls. I've got lead though, so that's a start.

Besides cap-and-ball revolvers, another thing I'd like to try out is flintlock guns. That also seems really fun to me.

Interesing. Menawhile envy ensues because my guns are mostly old hand-me-downs, and one that was a birthday present. First and foremost would be the 50-plus-years old .22 rimfire revolver, that I take to the range every so often. It's a J.C. Higgins, that's how you know it's old, cheap, and obscure. :V
