Actually, Higgins was just Sears & Roebuck's trade name for the guns they made in store. There was millions of them made, some right up here in the Cooey factory, some by Winchester, etc. etc. They're not super obscure and are great guns. Most of my chickens are killed with a Higgins .410.

Making shot for blackpowder stuff isn't too tough relative to handloading for anything else, and requires much less, if more specialized equipment. You need a bullet mold and a way to melt lead, and that's about it. If you wanna get fancy, you can make paper cartridges by measuring out your powder on to rolling papers, soaking the paper in potassium nitrate and rolling them up. That's what's in that little box in the big fancy wood case. You can make shot en-mass too if you just want something that kinda fits and goes pop, but you need a really tall tower and some other stuff to do it, which I won't go into unless you're really interested. You can also make the powder yourself with some basic chemistry and a coffee machine, though I don't recommend it, or with alot of patience and some every day stuff like piss and charcoal if you're oldschool.

Contrast to handloading cartridges, which needs powder measures, presses, dies, shell holders, a media tumbler or some other way to clean brass, a brass prep tool of some kind, brushes, lubes, cases, bullets, primers etc. etc.

The rest of the stuff you need to actually load the shot into the pistol is built right into the gun - the lever under the barrel is for pushing balls into the cylinder.

Flintlocks are a PITA which is why I have none these days. It's too wet up here. Also, if you're lefty and shooting a rifle, you have to contend with a small explosion right in front of your face when they go off.
Gone. Cheers guys.

Yeah, I knew that was the case, but wasn't sure how common they were. Plus, not many people would recognize their label, I suspect.

And yeah, left-handed as well. I likely would be leery of a flintlock for that reason. :V

Yeah, flintlocks are probably a good bit of trouble to own compared to everything else, but like, I just can't get over how cool the idea is in my head.

LIKE COME ON THAT'S PRETTY FUCKING COOL

You should get into pistols RD. They're all lefty friendly when you get down to it.

That's a german matchlock of some kind. I've only played with the rifles a bit. Like a flintlock, but even more of a PITA.
Gone. Cheers guys.

Very tempting. Just I'm a cheapskate and thus haven't looked into buying a semi-auto. Or a flintlock, if that's what you meant. :V

I can't get the idea that the pictured firearm is a wooden dildo with a gun at one end out of my head.

Lulz! Well, germans are known for mildly fucked up porn.

EDIT cause I missed RD's comment: A Jericho is cheap, takes CZ mags, and will last you forever. Otherwise, quite a few of the Filipino 1911s are decent for the cost. Chinese ones are good too, but I'm pretty sure they're still under import ban in the US.

It's a Military Heritage German Handgonne. An arquebus, just cut down so cavalry troopers could fire it with one hand. Late-ish 1500s, I'm pretty sure. A replica, of course.

One of the other guys saw my slide kicking around and nicely cerakoted it - I was expecting a few weeks before I'd have time to get it done myself. So, that's coming along nicely.

The rest of my parts are probably around 3 weeks out, so I must unfortunately be patient. I ended up getting a pretty basic two piece full length guide rod coming - I don't subscribe to long being better than short, but figured what the hell. Also ordered both of these:

Whichever looks better stays on this one, the other one goes on the next one.

And some of these:

which in retrospect are the wrong style. But I guess we'll see.

I've got a few more little internal parts and knicknacks coming that I'll talk about if they actually end up in and on the gun.

Besides that, I need to decide how to do the engraving. I talked with one of my buddies here, and he suggested a bright wood medallion, since lasers won't go deep enough into most metal to prevent rub issues. I might also just have the ruger logo gone over - buddy put a thin coat on this thing, so it still shows up a little bit, and wrecks my plan of putting something else where it was. That's still probably for the best, since thick cera looks ugly. I dunno :s. I was seriously planning to have three weeks to figure that shit out.
Gone. Cheers guys.

What do you think is the biggest gun you've ever fired?

Biggest diameter, not counting shotguns, would be a .585 Hubel express we built for a guy. I shot the barrelled action into the bullet trap without a stock, which might not count but was impressive, trust me. There's a video of two of the other guys doing it on youtube somewhere.

Biggest in terms of powder charge is the trusty .50 BMG.

In terms of "why the fuck would you ever want that" big guns I've fired, I think the 7.21 Lazzaroni Firebird takes the cake. It's not objectively large compared to most other stuff, but it's painfully overbore, and I'm not sure what a person does with a .284 diameter bullet going near 4000 feet per second.

Spoiler: Ok, that one is big enough to spoiler (hover to show)

There's one of these hanging in the storefront. It's a little broken and I maybe knocked a few parts off it when I was hanging up a zodiac next to it when I first started here. It's a pipe dream, but I'd love to somehow get it running again and shoot it some day.

I mean come on, doesn't that look fun?

I saw that picture on QI. Fuckin punt guns. I think they were for vaporizing entire flocks of ducks.

I like the KS-23.

Some of you probably already know, but "23" doesn't refer to gauge or caliber. It's the barrels measurement in millimeters. These shotguns are made from discarded 23MM anti-aircraft gun barrels. The civilian version is the TOZ-123 and all versions were made illegal for sale in the united states by the Clinton administration.

Punt guns were absolutely for killing ducks. You load them, then put them in your little boat (called a punt), and blasted the lake surface clean when they were landing or taking off.

I hadn't heard of those before. That's some punk rawk warhammer shit right there. Wiki says:

"The original KS-23 was developed jointly by NIISpetstekhniki (MVD) and TsNIITochmash in 1971, it was accepted for use by the Soviet police in 1985.[1] The gun has a barrel length of 510 mm and an overall length of 1040 mm. The KS-23 has an underbarrel tubular magazine capable of holding three rounds, with one in the chamber giving the gun a maximum round capacity of four. The gun's effective range is 150 m."

Note - don't commit crimes in Russia.

Looks like those are legal here. Maybe that should be the next project.....
