Eh. I still think up some rather derpy things at times. And yes, boop the snoot thread.

Spoiler (hover to show)

As I spend the evening purifying the essence, I ponder my studies. I remember the rituals needed to consecrate unholy artifacts, and wonder whether my understanding of the arcane is enough to cleanse this world of any dangerous items I might find within. At a bare minimum, removing temptation to wield such weapons would be a wise idea.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

I also ponder my weapon of choice. With my cloak too damaged, this is the only other use I have for the purified essence. But to use it is a double-edged sword, at least without a holy mask to guard my eyes. For now, it is only good as a weapon, and as a symbol of my mission. I recall little of the inscription on the decoration, Latin was never my strong suit.

But I recall firmly the incantation I must use if I need to activate its defensive purpose.

But now, the morning comes. Day 13, and only two of those flying monsters remain in my way.

I sound the incantation, and a brilliant bright light overtakes me. The ringing in my ears and white light drown out everything, but as I land a blow on the creature, it becomes readily clear that the flash had just as much an effect on the monster. Soon enough I'm the one on the offensive, as this time its tendrils can do little against the leather armor I wear.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Even then it was hard-fought, but soon enough the wicked thing evaporated, sent back to whatever hells it emerged from. I'm not sure I can handle the next one in the area. Instead I sneak along to the higher level, in the hopes that I can gain respite there.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

First thing I find is some meager scrap of paper, some note evidently left behind during whatever calamity caused this. I suppose this further confirms what I saw in my travels, before I tried to assail this place. Obvious even to these heretics. No matter. I made my way across the winding path, knowing that this middle level was some object lesson about the easy path being the hardest. Some excuse to booby-trap the shortest walkways.

I ventured upwards and found to my surprise, the area seemed to be empty. I did find a strange sword, black with red markings on it. I realized at once these were emblems of The Sanguine Order. Some conflict between them? I know nearby is one of their accursed sites.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

It was on the other end of the walkway I found signs of the cultists. One of them seemed to have been their leader, evidently killed by one of the monsters lingering in the area.

...how'd this chucklefuck get out of his room? And how'd he die?

Holy shit, the archon's dead? Well, that makes things moderately easier. I normally just peek the doors open and throw explosives in there, then shut it again until he dies.

I actually don't know how tough he is in a fair fight, I've always been too cautious about my late-game survivors to risk taking him on.

If you have at least one speed trait, he's trivial to kill. Less chance of stunlock from lightning. There's a dead mi-go next to him too, so fucked irf I know what the deal is. He's in cultist faction, so they shouldn't be fighting. D:

I returned to camp, free to further the basic work of survival and examine what all I've found raiding the floating temple. The priest it seemed was wielding one of their lightning weapons, a golden emblem with 3 prongs. As for the sword, I can't help but get a bad feeling just being near it. Whereas that golden weapon was easily destroyed, the sword seems to be beyond my ability.

I'm also worried about this sword possibly falling into the wrong hands. My little makeshift campsite is rather exposed. In addition to securing food, I might work on fortifying it to some extent, enough to hinder intruders to a degree. Being near the road has given me the benefit of seeing roaming revenants before they get too close, but might expose me if any survivors travel this way.

For now though, I sought to follow the road, and confirming my suspisions, I see the edge of a town not that far west of the river. I could use supplies, tools, and information. Even in the time before I initiated my quest, I never strayed too close to the towns, and we mainly just followed the rivers. It's how I knew to retrace my steps and find the crater.

The city is large, infested with revenants and even a few monsters. As such, I stick to the edge of the town, using the houses to my advantage. Even then there are a few stragglers, along with a small group of peculair undead, enveloped in living shadows.

Ultimately, my brief incursion into the edge of town yields a few useful materials, but not much. Narrowly evaded some form of flying drone that seemed to be attracted by an alarm I set off during one of my intrusions, but that proved helpful for distracting the few undead that followed me.

I intend now to build adequate shelter, not a crude little pine construction. But first I made another venture into town, to scavenge addition supplies, tools, maybe even containers.

In the process I found, to my horror, a house seemingly grown over entirely by paper-like material, the street near it littered with the mangled bodies of revenants. And the cause? Multiple massive wasps, buzzing angrily around the area. I'd taken care to avoid individual instances of these corrupted creatures, but this nest is dangerously close to one of my intended targets.

I strayed deeper into the streets than I wanted to, but anything to avoid these things. They're rather adept at killing the undead, I doubt I'd have an easy time if they ganged up on me. Not to mention, I feel bad for these things, terrifying as they are. They are clearly mundane creatures of this world, warped by whatever perverse power caused all this. They do nothing more than what they would in their normal form.

But as with any animal, I will slay them if I have no choice, or if supplies are such that hunting becomes necessary.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

As I feared, it isn't some corrupted insect I need fear. Some monstrous revenant followed me out of town, gaining on me rapidly. It seemed to be all aglow, body partly mechanical in nature. And this was confirmed in the jolt it struck me with when it closed in, nearly flooring me from pain.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Actually killing it was easier than I expected, but for a moment panic bested me. I assume the monster was wounded in clashes with chitinous things, be they mutant or otherworldly. I found myself examining the creature more closely, its body a wreck of advanced technology melded with a corrupted, inhumanly muscular body.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

I normally do the minimum needed to give the revenant eternal peace, in both body and soul. But in this case I attempted to cut away the machinery, perhaps fearing modern science could animate a body too damaged for these dark powers to control. I feel disgusting for butchering something once human, finding at least one component seemed reasonably intact.

The remaining pieces were merely short-circuited pieces of junk, and good riddance. I decided the lone intact device would serve as a morbid trophy.

Hnnng, must I triple post? Triple the forum heresy. Editing to world settings to set season length to 14 makes this feel a lot less daunting, but I can tweak it back to 30 after however this ends.

It is late into summer, and I have largely just been tending to my camp and further securing supplies. I've secured some books to read and study as well, but something else troubles me. I have been reluctant to track down the blood mages, but I know they have a hideout close to the floating temple. If I intend to solve the mystery of that strange sword, I need to track them down.

If I'm lucky, it'll also be good to get out of this heat. I've no comfortable substitute for my current gear.

Soon though, I'm in sight of what appears to be the place. Bordering more sweltering swamps, a lone oasis blighted by their temple built in the center of it. And lingering in the area, more assorted inhuman things. Once again, only the flying monstrosity is a major concern.

I stand corrected. That human mimicry put up a good fight, and the area overall seems to be extremely hectic. There is an immense cacophony of violence going on from deeper inside the structure, and these monsters are hazard enough as it is. But I have one advantage I lacked last time I clashed with the flying monsters.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

My studies of our order's tome led me to understand some of our rituals. Enough to work a mask into the image of the divine, and grant it the power of sight beyond sight. The blast of my hammer still rings in my ears, but the mask's power wards my sight, and I can see to press the advantage. Each time the flash staggers and disorients this monster, preventing it from playing hit-and-run.

And I return from sleeping until 1 AM.

Flying polyps are nasty motherfuckers. They don't fight fair. So don't fight fair with them. The real trouble here's gonna be the surprise waiting at the bottom. Unless it can be stunned too, we'll see.

One monster down, at least one more to go. One of the animated blood mages was carrying a tome, that I recognized as an alchemical text, one of few books our order approved. And soon enough, the next airborne horror is put down, the creature apparently having taken down some sort of mutated slug with it.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

I'm hoping that's the last of these pests. That said, I'm starting to get a feel for the pattern needed to kill them safely. Keep the pressure up, recharge the hammer after each blast, hit it twice, blast it again...

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Gods above and below, you can't be serious! Once again I'm forced into retreat, though at least this time my pursuer is left dazed, granting me a considerable head start.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

As I finally get a moment to catch my breath, I start to become more aware of the pain, and the severity of my injuries. Whether through being caught up in a berserker rage, sheer adrenaline, or divine guidance, I'm amazed I managed to kill three of those things, and one of those homonculi, without falling apart at the seams. I need to head back to camp, mend my torn clothes, heal up, and break down every mote of essence obtained in the battle.

Aaaand ded. Game plus save will go here when the damn thing finishes uploading.

* World option has been changed to 14-day seasons. You can freely edit that if you desire longer.
* If you switch to a different version, remember to copy over the graveyard and memorial folders, not just the save and Mining Mod.
* If you find a lone car west of a river marked on the GPS, following the road east and north will have you pass by the camp. Sword's in the pine lean-to.
* Fun shit is farther southeast of the camp. Floating temple's cleared out, but beyond that is the island temple.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

And to make things worse, two developments. One, I realize when nearing my camp that I completely forgot about the stolen shopping cart I resorted to carrying tools in. Two, it isn't long before I see signs of a survivor following the river, just as I did with Kristin. If they're friendly, then this is a boon to my quest. But I'm no condition to fight if things turn ugly.

Worse, my camp is only partly set up to deter intruders. Thankfully it seems that they have yet to stray near the road, and I am free to purify essence to make use of my cloak. Bad as these injuries are, I don't want to risk being attacked while trying to merely sleep it off.

With the morning arriving, I'm surprised I wasn't bothered in my sleep, and everything still seems to be in place. There's only a dull ache where I presumably broke a rib or two, or perhaps lingering soreness from the gilded aegis forcibly setting and mending fractures.

I decide to approach them, cautiously. And without my weapon at the ready. I hope this won't prove foolish, but I suspect appearing armed will provoke them. Not to mention, the hammer is my only outward sign of being a member of the Cleansing Flame. I do ensure the hammer is charged with energy, so I can at least stun them if needed.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Mercifully, they seem to be a desperate traveler, seemingly the only survivor of a pair. While it seemed her companion was picked off by...something, rather than killed in a foolhardy charge like the one Kristin and I made, we still share circumstances.

It soon became apparent that she was traveling north, and that the beast that pursued her was likely to my south. As I reached the road to hunt this thing down, I realized to my horror that it seemed to be shambling out of the treeline, just south of my camp. If I hadn't been bold enough to confront this survivor, I likely would've been caught completely off-guard.

But as with the flying monsters, the hue and cry of my hammer staggers it all the same. This thing appears as Legion made manifest, but I have witnessed worse.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

The beast falls before me, though it took all but one of the purified essence I had left after healing my wounds last night. I found her again and told of the beast I slew. Even if this thing seems unrelated to my mission, I few like I'm actually doing this world some good, for the first time in years.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

While I feel like a bold-faced liar saying I can protect someone, given what happened last time, having someone to watch my back might be desirable.

I led her back to my camp, thankfully she seems to know little of the alchemy book I left there, and the sword is hidden in the old lean-to I build the camp around. Decided we need to make a second place to rest, easily handled by gathering boughs of pine.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Eventually I decide to ask her a bit about herself, and it became apparent that she vaguely recognized the markings on the hammer I carried. Seems she does in fact know a bit about the arcane, but where she learned it I'm unsure. No apparent connection to my order, to the Keepers of the Oath, nor to the Sanguine Order. Possibly an alchemist or scribe's apprentice. I will have to keep a close eye on her given the item I guard, but her reaction to my being a member of the Cleansing Flame suggests she's trustworthy.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

With the camp a bit more livable for two people, I decided to ask her about the additional quests she was considering. This seems rather crude, mundane work for a mage-hunter, but should be trivial to handle.

However, I would like to retrieve my cart as well, as I just realized that I left my book in there, in addition to essential tools. I awaken rather early in the morning, letting my still tired ally know only that I'll be back soon, and that she can keep resting. I ventured forth to the odd little oasis, to retrieve my cart and to scout the area out while I still had the cover of darkness.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Even in the darkness, I could see something horrifying had made a complete mess of the place. Something massive was clawing at the battered doors, vaguely resembling a dragon. But from the stench of death and the way it moved, I suspect the monster has fallen prey to the same curse afflicting the revenants haunting this structure.

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

A note as well, some sign of my brethren having visited this place? This bodes unwell. I prepare myself for battle...

Screenshot:
Spoiler (hover to show)

Though the Sun shall shine upon the Earth, many shall never see the dawn again. As the dead rise and hunger for the living, and horrors from beyond spread over all the land, both magic and technology struggle to turn the tide.

Though hope remains, one more falls to the horrors of a new era, leaving an unfinished mission. A wicked blade lies hidden only by a scant few boughs of pine, and winged death lurks in a ruined temple. For now, the Cleansing Flame is extinguished.
