You were found guilty of smuggling, murder, something, I don't know that's up to you the player. What I do know: Your characters have been assigned a kind of work-release contract. You find a powerful artifact so the Federation can lock it away, and you go free. Now you're going to need a bit of freedom to do that, so the Federation has given you that, but you are being monitored, so that the Federation can keep you on task.
(you are pretty well free to explore if you so desire by the way)
How I'm doing combat
So, I'm going to do it one of two ways, one of which will take more time, the other will be easier and make combat quicker.
Way one, the faster way
I roll a d20 to determine if you hit, and depending on the number determine how damaging the attack is. 20 you've pretty well blown somebodies head off if your using a gun, 1 and that fancy new blaster just over heated and blew your hand off. To put it bluntly 1's do have consequences, but 20's are REALLY REALLY POWERFUL.
way two, the way of rolling
Again, d20 to determine if you hit. Then we got the dice to determine damage, then factor in that 'gunslinger' skill you might have, then what your characters career is might factor into the equation, maybe a + maybe a -, depends. Conversely 20's won't be quite as powerful as in way one, and 1's won't neccessarily dismember your hide. Basically with this I'll assign bonuses to skills and your characters background, and I'll determine how much damage your weapon does.
Pick whichever sounds more fun I guess? I don't know I'm not a cop, just a college student who's broke...
Going to give you the CS then explain some of the things

Now explaining things
First, just a general note thingy I'm putting here
You absolutely can edit, change, or scrap your character for a new one before we start. If you want to change characters after we start PLEASE PM ME. I will work with you on introducing this new character and phasing out the old one, just be aware I'm not going to let you hop between multiple characters, so if I see someone trying this I'll probably make you stick with a character for a good while before letting you switch again. The point of this is fun, so if you don't enjoy your character I'm perfectly fine with helping you change to a new one, but I'm not going to pull a black hole or something out of my arse. I'll explain changing characters in a wee bit.
Race explanation
be an anthropomorphic racoon, be an orc, be a robot, come up with something interesting, maybe include an explanation of the race below you sheet, actually if it's not something obvious please do explain it, you and me might be thinking very different things.
Background Explanation
what did you do to get here, what jobs have you had, what hobbies? Just background stuff. Oh, and if a part of your characters background pertains to a skill they have, make sure to include it! If I see a skill that's not mentioned, like say Gunslinger, and it conflicts are how the skill was obtained isn't explained here I'm going to call it into question and may say that you can't have it. NOTE: This is only an issue AFTER we start.
Skill explanation
What does your character do? This just gives me an idea of what your character is actually capable of. say you have a skill called Rifleman, I'm going to assume that your character has experience specifically in handling rifle like weapons, so they'd be more capable with those over say pistols. If you want to explain your skills put the explanations after the rest of the sheet and mark it as Skill Explanations Below or something similar.
Clothes, Armor, Weapons, Tools, Other Gear
Clothes are purely cosmetic, though having a gangs insignia (or other similar things) on them will have an effect in how your treated. Armor helps in combat by reducing damage taken and some armor makes you harder to hit. Weapons are weapons. Tools are basically that, tools. Tools are things used outside of combat like lock picks or medkits, though these items can be used while technically in combat.
Changing Characters
If you don't like your current character and want to make a new one PM me here and I'll work with you. Changing characters will take a bit, I might have to intentionally kill your character that you want to change from, so be aware of that. and do note I'm not going to let you change character every five minutes.
And that's it I think, if any of this is confusing please tell me. It's a bit late so I may have been unintentionally confusing.
