I almost forgot today was Fourth of July, so I'm now playing the 'is that a firework, a pistol, a rifle, or a drunkard shooting his shotgun up into the air while laying drunk in the road.' Though seriously out here you do wonder if that was someone firing a gun or an actual firework.

So most of us don't really use the full capabilities of our computers, and when we do it's somewhat rare anyway, so why waste all of that extra power your computer has to offer? Donate it to Folding@Home and you can help Stanford University research cures to diseases like Cancer, Alzheimer and Parkinsons.

It will install a program that will allow you to configure how much computing power you're donating to them, it works by sending a chunk of a problem to your computer, allowing your PC to solve the problem and then send it back to their main server.

Now remember, the more of your hardware you donate to solving the problem, the hotter your computer is going to run, and the more power it's going to be pulling, at a rough estimate running the software at full load for 12 hours a day will cost you between $150-200 a year in energy bills, but remember this is no different to maxing out your hardware on a demanding game for 12 hours a day anyway, and that doesn't help save lives.

You are, supposedly, rewarded in cryptocurreny once you've solved enough problems, CureCoin, it's very similar to BitCoin but I have no idea how much it's actually worth or how much computing power you need to donate to even get any, since I've just started using the software. This is unlikely to recoup the energy costs unless you're running a super efficient mining rig anyway, but it'll make that $200 a year a bit easier.
If you want to earn CureCoins then you need to enter your Team Number as 224497, this means all the 'points' you earn for solving problems are shared with CureCoin, the more points you share with them each day, the more CureCoins you're given, remember that you can't anonymously solve problems to earn CureCoins, you have to set up a username and a passkey.

No it's legitimately me, I figured someone was gonna be wary of spam but I've got this software running on my laptop right now and I've checked it, it's definately safe. There is also an android version of Folding@Home so your phone can donate unused processing power too.

For real though guys, go download that thing, you're helping to cure some of the most devastating diseases we've ever known.

Don't worry, your internet connection isn't a problem, you're not downloading and uploading data constantly, you just get sent a packet of information, your computer solves it, which takes about 12+ hours usually, and then sends it back, while I do have fairly good internet I've not noticed even a slight slowdown from it.
