I need to play Rust now. I'm a Dayz mod early alpha gut, there from almost the beginning, so I learned those lessons long ago. Another lesson is that ANYONE using ANY sort of scoped weapon is out to kill players. Scopes are overkill for NPCs in Dayz, ammo is rare too, so never trust a man with a scope on his gun with more than 2.5x zoom.
I haven't played DayZ and after hearing what the DayZ creator did, I probably won't play it until it gets into Beta or near a Full Release. But Rust I've played enough to start learning the basic survival MMO lessons I should've already learned about, I mean fuck I've played SS13 and its almost the same concept.
You'd think that everyone wants to work together for a greater good, but no they don't. Everyone would rather kill everyone instead of banding together against a common enemy, and after my "Cannibal Holocaust" run before I quit for the night taught me a couple things. 1. Killing players and acting spoopy about it is fun, like too much fun, I felt like some tribal leader out of an HP Lovecraft tale. 2. Being good is only fun when the people you're helping attempt some form of silliness (RP) or when they help in return.
I mean when we were doing the fire thing, I actually felt like I had a real player on player interaction I keep hearing about. You know those stories about when two humans find each other, do something funny, and then go their separate ways as one posts about it on some internet board. But sadly not everyone wants to be silly and have some stupid fun. Some people just want to have a blood sport, others like enslaving the nakeds and gunning them down, and others simply try to ignore everyone.
My only other "survival MMO" experience was Reign of Kings, and Reign of Kings is basically a PvP focused game that really needs more love. I mean when you play Reign of Kings during 12AM-6AM everything is peaceful and many of the calmer players are on at the time, I built up a homestead and all that one morning (read as: 4AM) only to return in the afternoon to find that I got killed and all my stuff had been stolen. But I normally play Rust and Reign of Kings to deal with other players, because the Minecraft community is so full of number typing 12 year olds, and most of the good servers have either died or moved on to Rust, DayZ, or Reign of Kings.
