Did any of the vanilla classes have a projectile based flechette? What I mean to ask is, did the warrior have a throwing flechette? I know the cleric has the gas bombs (very effective for killing the midboss) and the wizard had plain old explosions. I would say something it could toss with a mid range AoE.

As a side note, the maultaurs piss me right the fuck off with their shields deflecting mah serpent rod. Only gets worse when they get the ranged attack.

The warrior chucks them like a grenade, yeah. For them I gave the defense-oriented skill path, the Defender, bigger blast radius and immunity to the explosion.

As for the question I asked ages ago, I eventually settled on making the cleric's flechette do an initial explosion on popping the gas effect, along with a nailbomb effect.

Speaking of which, the cleric's flechetee is also damn effective against those centaurs.

Also, I'm pondering an idea for a Doom map. One that takes the look and feel of Wolfenstein 3D, then does things with it you can only really do in ZDoom. I'm torn between two ideas though.

1: A full-on warzone of a map, with not just enemies but also friendly Red Army NPCs fighting alongside the player. Will have to sprite up different NPC sprites and possibly add a greater variety of weapons, but the actual map itself might be fairly simple, unless I think up a sensible objective.

2: A more subtle map, taking on the ideas of the original Castle Wolfenstein games before iD came along. Sneak around, infiltrate someplace important, try not to get swarmed. Likely to have neutral-until-provoked guards patrolling city streets, and attack-on-sight guards in restricted areas. May further complicate things with officers or SS patrolling the obstenately safe areas, who know the player is a spy and will attack even in the city.

A nail bomb effect sounds cool. I knew about the maultaur gas bomb stuff. It's about the only way to kill them easily without the wraithverge, but if they start blocking while under the gas then it becomes impossible to exploit their stunlock.

I'd go for the warzone type map. It makes me think of the fortress assault level in brutal doom: hell on earth. Work your way up a series of canyons along with a large group of NPC marines to assault and breach a hell fort. It even had tanks bombarding the fortress walls. Tons of enemies, lots of projectile dodging. Guts by the gallon. Listen to some Saboton while playing that level.

Still, stunlocking them and damaging them even while the shield up is useful. X3

As for that idea...code-wise it would be simpler, whereas that idea will demand more spritework. Admittedly I'm better at spriting than wrangling code. I'm not sure if I'd make it an urban map or something like that idea you just mentioned.

So the starbound 1.0 release has come. The new intro is nice but... fucking tedium. They put a timer on the crafting, and if you close the window before it's complete, you cancel the crafting. they reduced the number of slots on the hotbar by half. They even removed the racially dependent ship AI sprites after they went through all the trouble of making and implementing them in the last version.

Chucklefish is the fucking worst. And by "fucking worst" I mean that I am palming the shit out of my face at how back asswards they are at game development. You can't implement something and say "This is a thing we want in the game, and it will be here forever! Look at all this stuff we put in!" and then rip all of it out by the roots a few seconds later. Oh, and with the re inclusion of the hunger system, they also removed the ability to teleport from underground and made it so your drop your entire inventory on death. By "entire" I mean the now 5 page inventory containing something like 250 items total. You can't play on the "casual" difficulty, which turns off item drop on death, without also turning off other good features. Just another game that is gonna get fixed with mods.

Also, the mod workshop barely works. You have to start and restart starbound several times to get the mods to actually show up in game.

Such fucking tedium. Picking berries or waiting for my forge to heat up in real life is less tedious.

I've noticed that. You know what STILL pisses me off? You can't pause in singleplayer. You've never been able to. And you probably never will.

Also, you have to hit "x" you get your other 6 hotbar slots. What's more annoying is that each "slot" has a left and right click slot, but many things count as two-handed for no sane reason. Sure, blocks make sense. You left-click to place as solid blocks, right-click to place them in the background. But torches and platforms don't do anything when right-clicked, so them taking up a full slot just makes the more awkward hotbar mechanic extra annoying.

On a more positive, mod-related note, I'm still more tempted to do the stealth version of my idea. D:

Do what you most feel like doing. You'll enjoy doing it more that way.

You bring up a good point about pausing. When they stripped away the hunger system, it wasn't so bad. Without hunger, you could just build a dirt box around yourself and go take care of whatever. With a hunger system though, the inability to pause is a glaring flaw. What if I gotta go bring dogs in? What if some mutant shows up on my driveway on his deth hawg wanting to throw down during the apocalypse? Without the ability to pause, I have no time to throw on my Ned Kelly suit and grab both sawn-off shotguns. How am I going to survive the post-trumpocalypse if I can't pause to arm myself properly?

Seriously though, it's a glaring flaw not having a pause feature.

Plus I'm thinking there will be an inevitable point where the player has, through careful tactics or sheer blind luck, become well-armed enough to make stealth pointless. So I could easily blend both ideas by making an infiltration mission transition into an overt warzone.

And exactly. You could mitigate it by sleeping in a bed though, but still. It makes you commit to taking a break from singleplayer, when in most games not HAVING to do that is one of several reasons why I don't do multiplayer anything that often.

Starbound has always been really tedious. I played 20 hours of "Go to next system, get better armor, repeat." Fuck that.
Thanks Peri for making me question muh sexualities once again.

I used to not mind the tedium that much. But eh. Shortly before the big fat update, I'd already started new characters due to it having been so long since last time I played with a friend. So having to start anew AGAIN so quickly, when early game progression has no real changes worth giving a shit about...
