So, I picked up BF1. My initial assessments were pretty much correct - it's all machine guns, experimental prototypes, etc. etc.
Six's assessment wasn't super far off either in some ways - it's not really at all historically accurate, which is fine but a little annoying in some ways. One of the singleplayer chapters (which are really overrated, but certainly far better than other BF games, and more on par with COD) has you strapping into an armoured suit and mowing everything down with 1918's version of a mini gun, and the others all feature similar stuff. There are also giant death zepplins in MP
Still, the MP is fun, and despite all the machine guns and high explosives running around, the tweaks they've made to the game modes are good. I was also kinda happy to see that using a iron-sight bolt action rifle is not completely impossible - while most people seem to run with the scoped versions, each BA gun has a "sweet spot" in which most solid hits will be a OHK. For example, the Lee Enfield has a 30m-80m sweetspot, which makes it excellent for using with iron sights as you will generally murder anyone at realistic, non-sniper ranges. They additionally have adjustable sights, which is something I rather liked from verdun - run around with your sights set at 150m, and you'll headshot at 50ish meters rather easily while still being able to easily hit stuff out to 200m without needing the scope. It's not very realistic, but it's also fixed the meta a bit - scouts now have a bit of incentive to move up, rather than camping super far back and trying to "snipe".
Contrary to what I was expecting, I haven't hit a single bug during gameplay yet. The menu is kinda buggy as hell, but that matters less.
If anyone else gets it, let me know. Some of the features, such as the tanks, planes, etc. are definately more useful when you have someone to play with.
