Chapter One
The Journey Begins

Wile zoomed through the hallways as the bells rang, a common signal that dinner was ready; and one of his favorite signals at that. He passed the Entrance of Kings, went through the hallways leading off into various offices, passed down the stairs, listening to the thundering clash of metal as he passed the single Blacksmiths shop, the chopping of wood as he passed the Woodcutters place of work. Gradually the various workshops he passed grew quieter as men, women, and apprentices readied themselves for dinner.

The only thing between him and food now as the Hall of Heroes, he always walked through here admiring the large and beauteous statues.

There was an iron statue of the hero Artyom;clad in armor and brandishing a long blade and shield, who had fought against the fiery beast Dargon and who had banished him out of the realm.

Next was a bronze statue of the humble medicine man Stalmos who had led the relief efforts of the Social Healers organization which had helped save as many as twelve-thousand lives from the extreme brutality of the Rot plague.

Finally at the end of the hallway stood a figure, his face shrouded in a cloak, a dagger in his hand and a vial of something in the other. Thanatos, the name ringed about Wile's head as he stared at it. Thanatos was still alive, but he kept to himself. He was the hero who had started the Hunters. It was a simple name for a group so deadly, they kept the entirety of the Kingdom of Many safe.
Hunters were authorized law-keepers, hardened like soldiers, each one deadly in their own aspect. Their number one concern was the safety of the Kingdom, especially against the vile plague of the Ab-

"Wile! Outta t'e way meh boy." A creaking voice said as a rod gently nudged Wile over.
Wile turned, a grin appearing on his face as he saw one of his favorite people in the entire Fortress they lived in, Roland.

Roland was a balding and aged fellow who took no real steps to hide it, his hair was gray except for a splotch of black on the first front hairs. He kept himself well shaved and had amber eyes which were filled with a sort of kindness and compassion that Wile and most others loved. He was a friendly old man, Wile didn't exactly know how old he was, but he was definitely friendly.

"Sorry Roland! I was looking at the heroes." He called out apologetically as the old man scooted past.
"T'e heroes eh? Why, did I tell ye t'e time that I was ah hero."

Wile almost said that he had, of course he had heard the story of how Roland had single-handedly trekked over the Mountains of Shroud to bring back enough food to feed the entire fortress for the rest of the year. He also was almost positive that the entire thing was false, but the way Roland could weave a story was amazing.

"I don't think so Uncle Roland, can you tell me at dinner?"

The old man leaned forth on his rod, glancing over his shoulder with a toothy grin already appearing.
"I don't think ye could stop meh, lad."

Continued:

Wile nodded happily and helped the old man to his seat near the end of the third table from the door. Roland wasn't extremely prominent, or of noble blood, he was not a hero, but even so he sat quite close to the noble's table, sometimes they even let him sit with them, albeit it was rare these days.

The newest Baron of the Fortress was named Richard, and he was a real pompous sack of wine. He was a sour, thirty-something fellow, while one would very rarely see a hero such as Thanatos, one always saw Richard. He paraded himself to the front of the Fortress and had re-instituted the nobles table.

It wouldn't have been so bad if that was where it had ended, he would have just been a bit arrogant, but no that wasn't anywhere close to where it ended. Richard would go down towards the blacksmith's shop and constantly degrade the fellow for not making his work exceptional enough.  He would did this with all the craftsmen, he would bark stupid orders at the local military commander, all in all he wasn't just a bad ruler, he was a bad person.

Wile shook his head as he pulled the seat out for Roland, who nodded with a grin
"When did ye b'come such a gent Wile?"
Wile returned the grin, accepting a pat on the head which rustled his already tousled black hair.
"Been taking lessons from you, Uncle."
Roland shook his head, still grinning.
"Always knew ye needed better choices 'n role models."

The old man hooked his rod into the back of his chair, it was oaken wood, likely traded for by the Fortress with the King's Capital. It was fancy, not as fancy as the noble chairs but it still held it's engravings of what appeared to be a simple farmer hoisting up a bundle of wheat, you could almost see the individual hairs on the man's beard. Fancy.

Wile took a seat next to Roland, and waited there as he told his entire story from beginning to end, by the time he was done a couple of other people had scooted over to listen in.  When it was all done he clapped his hands a couple of times and then turned to see what was on his plate.

It appeared to be a pork chop of some sort, he wasn't really sure what piece of the pig he had received but it looked crispy and delicious. He dug into it, taking a big bite before taking a scoop of mashed potatoes and eating that as well. Finally he took a swig of the sweet fortress drink named Ambrose. It tasted like honey but it was much less viscous and flowed more like water. It could also have various fruits added in for flavor though this one was fairly plain.

Beside him, Roland took a drink of his own Ambrose. He could have ordered an ale if he'd wanted one; after all he was well past the age requirement, but he seemed to enjoy Ambrose a lot more. Wile had never drank a full mug of ale, the fortress had rules that those under eighteen springs should not drink alcoholic beverages for fear it made the bones porous and weak. Wile was only sixteen springs as it was, though he had plenty of childlike features he could also be quite serious when he needed to be.

He took in another scoop of mashed potatoes, wishing that he could have some corn or maybe peas of some sort to dip them into. He settled for putting the potato in his mouth and taking a swig of Ambrose at the same time.

"Boo." A female voice said behind him, a young woman stepped passed and gave Roland a hug from behind before taking a seat across from them.

"Hello m'dear daughter." Roland said as he let loose another toothy grin.
"Grand-daughter, Great Papa."
Roland nodded and pointed at her "And ne'er forget yer worth."

With that Roland returned to his food. Wile was watching the woman casually, stealing glances of her when he came up from his food.

She was Wile's age and stepped around with obvious confidence in her abilities, her hair was a snowy white, it was long and flowing and beautiful, Wile thought as he watched her. She had a fit figure and wasn't very weighty or too skinny. Her eyes were a light blue.

Wile snapped out of his staring for a few moments to compose himself.

"How are you today Winter?" he muttered with a bit less confidence then he was going for.

Winter turned her head to him, taking a sip of Ambrose before replying "Same old, same old. Still trying to learn how Boney does things."

Wile nodded, Boney was the fortress' head doctor, a quick-witted and excitable man who had a quick temper to boot.

"I hope he isn't causing you too much trouble." Wile said as he took a sip of his drink, the last sip in the mug.

"Today wasn't so bad, no one was really hurt much so we treated one of the Guard hounds, the thing tried to snap Boney in the hand when he started to set it's leg though." Winter smiled at the memory.

"Well, that's not too bad then. I promise if I ever break something I won't try to bite you." Wile said, giving a slight chuckle. She reciprocated and gave a giggle of her own.

"Why thank you Wiley, you are such the gentleman."

"Well, one does one's best."

Pretty great so far.
There is probably no more terrible instance of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man — with human flesh.

Continued:

The arrogant nobleman strode to the front of the dining hall and gave a shout for attention, not a soul paid him any until the Guard Captain stepped up to the front himself and let out a bellowing shout.
"PAY ATTENTION!"
The room grew silent as everyone turned their attention to the Guard Captain.
Richard stepped forward then and snapped his fingers in the air like the pompous person he was.
"I'm glad you all decided to pay attention to your betters."
A few people in the crowd grunted with disapproval.

Richard stroked his black mustache as he spoke.
"As you are all aware, Patch plants begin to grow at about this time of year, they are useful for our medical staff in fighting off infections due to wounds. Therefore we will be asking for volunteers to go out and search for Patch plants tomorrow."
The room was quiet for a few moments as people muttered and spoke to eachother, it was reasonably safe outside of Fortress so long as one was smart, but this was basically menial labor and most of the people around Fortress tried to avoid that.
The Guard Captain, Malcom, stepped forward a bit. "Of course I will be coming and I will also be bringing the Pack and Stone along with me.
The infamous Guard Pack, a vicious set of large dogs trained for years in the art of killing or at the very least incapacitating. Stone was a little less vicious, he was the senior of Wile by only four years and had been training with Malcom to eventually succeed him as Guard Captain.

Wile glanced around the people near him, a couple seemed reluctant as if they didn't quite want to wander, and then a whisper breathed into his ear.
"You want to go with me?"
Winter was whispering into his ear, he couldn't help but shiver slightly before nodding and whispering back
"Sure, never hurts to work my legs out."
She gave him a smile and then raised her hand to volunteer, Wile did the same.

Richard let out a yawn as he pointed at Wile and Winter as well as a couple of other people who had raised their hands.
"Alright, then. Four or so should be enough."

Winter began to scoot back towards her seat but before she could Roland grabbed at her wrist and gave her another hug.
"Be careful deary, don't stray too far from the Guards."
"Don't worry Grandpapa, I will stay near the Guards."
Roland nodded solemnly and let her go, he leaned over and coughed into his hand, but in the cough Wile thought he caught hold of some words.

The Baron took his seat once more and Malcom began to make patrols about to the volunteers.
"Wile, sleep early, eat early, meet us at the Entrance of Kings before dawn's first light, we'll have further instructions then."
The towering figure that was Malcom strode away, his chainmail clinking slightly as he walked.

Another tall figure was stepping behind Malcom, but stopped for a moment to glance at Wile.
"Aren't you a little young to be gatherer?" the voice spoke, the tone was sarcastic and Wile could identify Stone from anywhere."
"Depends, aren't you a little old to be a watchdog?" he replied with a smirk.
Stone nodded, gave Wile a pat on the shoulder and wandered off to follow his master.

Dinner was finished and everyone returned to their tasks, Wile didn't have much to do, he went to the Fortress library and listened to groups of scribes debate their ideas to one another, he always found them interesting and they were the source of most of his education.

After that was done, Wile strolled over to the Dormitory's where he lived, he didn't have his own room as many of the Fortress dwellers did. After all, orphans didn't need their own rooms. He was taken care of though in his room and at day's end when he returned he always found it cleaned and tidy. He missed his parents dearly, the Rot plague that had been stopped by Stalmos had not saved all. It was a miracle really that Wile himself was alive, but the cure had come just in time to save him and many others.
"But not everyone." he sighed as he buried himself into his pillow and pulled the quilts up to his shoulders.

As he drifted off into sleep, the only thing he could think of was tomorrow's mission, a chance to be helpful for Fortress and to finally do something meaningful and productive. That and the words Roland had so covertly shifted into his ear.
"Keep her safe."

I'm getting some major Dwarf Fortress vibes from this, now we just need mother's using their babies as weapons and we'll be good to go in that department.

There are going to be some slight vibes, the population of Fortress are human however and the enemy is much worse than a goblin. Glad you're liking it tho, nothing makes me happier.

Continued: [Sorry for all the continueds, eventually I may make this into a short story and want to put it all together ya know.]

Wile awoke to the sound of hooting owls and stepped over to his door. On the knob hung a set of unisex adventurer clothes, all leather padding as well as a patched up hood to keep the sun off your head.  Today was going to be fun! They were going to find the Patch plant, Wile loved all the smiles that the medical staff gave to those who delivered Patch to their doors. Wile calmly walked over to the Entrance of Kings, there waited the others.

Malcolm was first to speak to them all. "You all know the objective, find as much Patch plant as you can, remember no one stray too far from the Pack. If anyone is in danger call out and we'll rush over, but I don't want any false wolf cries all right?" Everyone in the group nodded and they made their way outside. On a rack there laid six torches, one for each person, they lit them and began to step into the woods surrounding Fortress.

The Guard set themselves up in a clearing, near the center of everyone, the others spread out throughout the woods. Patch plants looked mostly Red except for a long white rod which poked out of their center and rose about an inch. The rod could be broken down into medicine. The plants were very rare however which is why searching happened so often.

Wile wasn't just searching for a Patch plant however, he had something else in mind. White roses began to grow around this time of year as well, and he would be quite happy if he could gather one for Winter. He had a feeling she would appreciate it.

Wile was entranced in his search for either a Patch or a White rose, he was making an efficient semi-circle when he turned and realized he could barely see the light of the Guard. When he turned back, a pair of glowing yellow eyes met him.

A hissing voice spoke, the noise ran shivers down Wile's spine.
"Look what we have here, a boy, a child."
Another pair of eyes, these ones a bit higher up glared at him as well, these ones were red. A bolder voice spoke.
"Oh yes, this dear boy looks oh so mild."

And then the voices began to create some sort of sick song.
"Why come here boy, searching for a fight."
"We'll gladly provide one...it'll be our delight."
"We can tear your limbs asunder."
"With the speed of hurling thunder."
"Perhaps we'll snap you with our teeth."
"Yes...you'll never leave our bloody heath."

Wile shrieked and took off running, faster then he had ever run before towards the light of the Guard. A powerful loping sound fell after him, it was gaining on him. Stone and Malcolm were coming towards him...he just might make it...

A heavy force slammed into his back, sending him sprawling past Malcolm and Stone with a shriek of pain.

It hurt like the devil, but a quick examination showed their was no real terrible injury.
The yellow eyes glowed at Malcolm, they were just barely below his own, nearly five foot.
"Looky here, a Guardsman come to save the day..."
Malcolm shouted as he drew a blade and shield from his back, Stone did the same.
"Everyone! Back to Fortress!"

The glowing yellow eyes stepped out of the darkness, revealing their form. The creature was large and fairly lean. It held a single strip of fur down it's back, the rest of it's body appeared to be...skinless. It took Wile a moment to realize that this beast was once a tiger. A tiger turned into an Abomination.

Wile lay there for a few moments, watching as the beast pounced forward with incredible speed, slamming into Malcolm's shield and propelling him backwards and onto the ground. Stone followed up with a slash at the creature's front shoulder but the beast curled around and slapped the sword away like it was a toy.

Wile heard a slight thudding from behind him and turned in time to see the Pack. The dogs swarmed to their masters, leaping onto the Abomination in unison and snapping at it's muscular flesh. It shrieked in agony, twisting about and catching a dog with it's teeth, it shook it by the back, rupturing it's spine before dumping the body like trash.

Malcolm stood up, drawing his blade once more and jabbing it into the beast's chest. This time he was successful, it let out a horrific and gurgling roar and shook violently trying to get the dogs off. It snapped another one by the neck and almost instantly decapitated it. Malcolm lifted his blade up to finish the beast, but it would have none of his blade.

In it's dying move, the creature lounged into Malcolm, sliding it's claws into his chest and snapping it's jaws into the lower piece of his face. Blood spewed from the injuries on them both, before the beast fell over, dead.

Wile rushed over to Malcolm, who laid in the dirt, hand on his chest, head sideways. Blood poured out of what was once his lower jaw, and wheezing sounds came from his chest. Stone pressed Wile out of the way, holding a hand down to his master. The man was in utter agony, terrible agony that no human should ever feel. Stone drew his blade, received a very slight nod from Malcolm, and finished him off.

Wile shook his head in terror and stress as a pair of hands grabbed him from behind. He grabbed them back, they were soft and he thought he could hear slight sniffling behind him. Winter. He pushed himself out of his trance, standing.

"Winter, you need to get to Fortress."
"You need to come too, you aren't a soldier Wile."
He nodded, wiping a line of blood from a small gash over his eye away.
"Stone, we need to hurry back to Fortress now!"
"Go away."
Wile stepped over to Stone touching his shoulder in an attempt to show support.
"GO AWAY!" Stone turned, hurling Wile backwards and onto the ground.
"Stone...there will be time to grieve, but now is not that time. There is another one out there."
"Let it come." Stone replied as he jabbed his blade into the ground next to Malcolm.
"We will, but you can't fight it alone...it's unwise, Malcolm wouldn't want you to waste your life for revenge."
Stone shook his head, tears streamed down his cheeks as he took his blade back and called for the dogs. The dogs were the only things there that didn't mourn the loss of their pack mates...their hearts were already harder than stone.

They ran back to Fortress, Wile more or less jogged it because he felt a slight ache in his right leg. Winter stayed with him the entire time.
"They killed him, Winter." Wile said as they neared the Entrance of Kings.
"I know Wile, I know."

They were only about ten meters from the Entrance of Kings, it was open, a pair of Guardsmen stood watch there, waiting for the return of their commander and the others.

A voice, Eerie as the darkness and the beasts within it.
"You killed my little pet, I suppose it's good and time we fought now isn't it? Lick your wounds humans, i'll be your judgement."

Wile turned and in the darkness he noticed the glowing red eyes from earlier.

Great as always Exodus. And it gave me Starship Troopers flashbacks ("It's a comedy" they said, comedy my ass), I mean I can handle some gore. But the way The Bugs tore those people limb from limb, made me cringe a couple of times.
