Ma always tried to keep him out of trouble, which meant away from me. Got sent away for a few years a while back, but she let me come back for some reason.
Donovan walked out the front door, flipping his hat onto his head and checking that his vest was buttoned properly. He walked in front of the old tudor and worked the crank before moving to get into the drivers seat. He started the motor and a glum look settled onto his face.
'Course I pay rent these days too, but I make good money so I always pay it, then a little extra.
He hit the gas and tore out onto the street at a rather dangerous speed, but he knew how to handle the vehicle. He needed to check on something and it would be a few more hours before the place would open anyway. As he tore down the road he caught a glimpse of a handful of coppers escorting three men to police cars.
Glad I'm not one of 'em, don't need Ma to have any more reason to hate me.
Donovan sighed and slowed down as he neared his destination. He pulled into the driveway of a rather large house that was too small for the number of occupants. He stepped out of the car and walked up to the porch, where a man and three children sat playing. The man looked up at Donovan as he approached and told the children "Go inside, big brother has business to take care of."
The three children seemed disappointed but went inside none the less. The man watched them then looked at Donovan, and the two men sat in silence for a few minutes before he finally pulled out a pack of cigarettes and extended it toward Donovan. Donovan took one and the man pulled one out for himself before putting the pack back in his pocket. Donovan had already pulled out a match and struck it, and the two men lit their cigarettes together. "So, Donovan, what brings you by my old place? You here to reminisce about old times or something else?"
Donovan looked at the man and sighed "Well Aces I was wondering if I could get your help. I know you need money, I know you got connections and you know how to handle a chopper if you need to, and I can pay you real good."
Aces sighed and shook his head "Hit me right where you know I'm weak right now, money. What do you need?"
Aces was a smart guy. He knows where to find good liquor that ain't gonna croak our clients, and he's an old hand with a gun.
"I need you to find me another liquor supplier, our old one is getting cold feet."
Aces sighed and looked at Donovan "I'll get on it."
"Thanks, here's an advance." Donovan said before handing some money to Aces, who took it and slipped it in his pocket.
