Utterly Mad

Apparently, to "take an arrow to the knee" is old viking slang for getting married. I doubt Bethesda is anywhere near that clever, but it would explain why all the guards in skyrim claim to have serious leg based injuries. Either that, or Bethesda is very clever and simply made up the story to make the iconic and repetitive phrase a bit more sensible.
