Hey Forrest, can you give a noob some tips? I've been trying to get into it but I have no idea what I'm doing.
Kaumolais or whatever they're called is a good starting culture. Owl Tribe as well. Start with the Unfortunate Hunting Trip scenario. It gives you a bow most of the time. Take your father's stuff, clothes, weapons, tools, everything. Attempt to kill whatever killed your dad, but don't sweat it if you can't bag it. Just don't let it kill you. It's probably gonna be a wolf, maybe a bear or lynx. If it's a lynx, try extra hard, that fur is super valuable.
Find an okay place to camp, build a shelter, start making rock knives. They sell for a lot. Find a village, trade for dried and smoked meat, or salted if it's all they have. With your newfound reserve of preserved food, look around for large animals. Spend days at a time wandering and looking for elk, reindeer, whatever you can find. Don't waste too much time on squirrels or birds, but if one does cross your path, trying to kill it is fine.
Find an elk or reindeer eventually, and chase that thing down. When you run into it on the map tile, go into sneak mode, try to shoot it at least once. Then, pursue it for as long as it takes. Use the tracking skill, keep on after it, shoot whenever it gets within range. Never deactivate sneak mode. Once you kill it, skin it, set up a shelter, make cords out of your dad's clothes, butcher the body, and use the cords to dry the meat of the animal on the shelter. Now you'll have a lot of food in 25 days.
Live off selling rock knives for roasted meat until your full dried reindeer is ready. That's as far as I've gotten, basically.
