Fallout 4's ai, however, is vastly improved since the last game. They take cover, they fire at your at where you are if you're sniping without relocating, they act like people. They react properly to their conrades dying. Instead of "Oh shit, that's gonna leave a stain." It's "You killed him/her!" and they talk about things, tell stories. All around they are drastically improved.
They do take cover, true, but they usually end up shooting their weapon into the cover instead of into the enemy. Overall, they are a liability in that they make sneaking around difficult by being easier to detect than you and activating traps. There are tons of videos on youtube depicting the companions, especially dogmeat, running into obvious traps. The interaction between them is improved, but that improvement is not AI related. It's script related, and Bethesda dumped a lot of money into their scripts to get that voice acting and that "alive" feeling as good as possible. Fallout 4 has great voice scripting and variety, but it's not AI.
