On a side note I finally tried out Misery. I was not prepared for the amount of new items or the fucking cost of everything.
It's your first time with MISERY? Yep, everything is very expensive. The next update will ease up on weapon repair costs a bit with some of it's features. Also prepare to get your lungs ventilated by the first bandit group to roll up on you with pistols. Or even the zombies at the start of the game if you pick "black road" scenario. It starts you with nothing more than a flashlight and a knife in the middle of the night at the sawmill.

I want to mention, thievery in games. The only games I can think of that get the whole "sneak in and rob the joint" feel right were the thief series and dishonored. I might be missing one or two others, but that's really it. I was playing oblivion and got to thinking, what is the point of building a thief in oblivion or skyrim? Those classes are little more than "stealth with bow" while assassin is "stealth with sword" and spellsword is "stealth with spells." Trying to actually role play a thief is meaningless as NPC's don't carry a worth while amount of gold and the crap they do carry is nearly valueless. Especially in oblivion. Pick pocketing keys? Who gives a shit, their houses are barren of valuables to pilfer. The only places worth tossing were the jewelers in the market district, and artifact collectors place. I got a mod that adds a county vault to each of the county halls, and that was fun until I cleaned them out. Without mods though, what is the point? Lockpicking? I can do it with any character. RP? Unless I am trying to RP an incredibly disappointed and impoverished thief, then whats the point in that? Why should I case a house to find out where the homeowners valuables are stored if the valuables consist of eleven gold coins, a silver fork, a scroll of water walking, and a sack cloth shirt? I liked skyrim because it gave you a visual indication of your likelihood of success, but otherwise it was just as meaningless to try and RP a thief. And don't say "well, you can be the thief robbing bandits or the ancient tombs!" So? I can be the warrior or the wizard robbing the bandits or the ancient tombs as well. Plus you can't even do anything with the stolen goods unless you are a member of the thieves guild, and in skyrim the fences had such a limited amount of gold, even if you managed to get a good haul you couldn't actually sell it all off. This seems to be a trend in newer games.

Well of course, you aren't really a thief when you play a sneaky bugger in an RPG like that, you're a rogue. Whether you're a thief too depends on whether you use your thieving talents for thievery, versus using them to get all the dungeon loot like you would in literally any RPG, all the way back to D&D. Because how many campaigns have you looting random peasant houses instead of dungeons? :V

Thats sort of the problem too. Who actually WANTS to be burgling houses when they could be hacking/shooting their way through a dungeon? We tried that in a D&D campaign in highschool. It was supposed to be a sneaky thing, and it started that way, but it turned to hack and slash the moment we encountered our first guard and the parties mage decided a fireball was the stealthiest means of getting around him.
I was the parties mage.

Yeah, a lone wandering bandit outside the Skadovsk fucking sniped me with a pistol while he was trying to fight two other stalkers, I was sitting behind some cover waiting for them to take him out so I could loot him, leaned around the corner to see if he was dead and he fucking killed me.
Also I learnt not to fuck with boars like I usually would, they'll fuck you up real good in misery.

The only issue I really have with the repair system is that repair kits aren't infinite uses, like they should be, I mean the actual repair kits though, not the stuff like gun oil and spare parts. IRL you don't break your various brushes and bore snakes and other equipment you need to clean your gun each time you use them, so you shouldn't in Misery, but they should be more expensive and rarer to find, not just for balance but because that'd be likely in the zone, they'd be in high demand and difficult to import.
I do have enough of an understanding to mod the files myself to actually make that change though, so I'm probably gonna alter it so I don't start with one but Owl will have them available, but it'll be expensive enough that I'll have to work for it but not so much that my weapon becomes useless before I can get it.

In the next update, I believe it will have more of a durability on the tools you use instead of a certain number of uses. The next MISERY update will also allow you to take apart busted guns to try and recover usable parts. It's meant to mitigate the problem of having tons of nearly useless guns and not being able to repair them. Look for alunes stashes. They are all over that first area, are a bit tricky to find (you won't ever earn their location from completing tasks) but some of them are filled with high value loot and perfect condition weapons. A hint on a stash that isn't aluns, up behind the power plant in the fenced in area is a stash with a mint condition stechkin APS. Not an amazing pistol, but not trash either. It will carry you though if you take care of it. You'll need to go through the teleporter nearby to get into the fenced area and you can also walk to the other area from inside that fenced off section after you have the maps.

Also, if you think boars are bad then watch out for snorks. They will fuck you up sideways to sunday.

A couple of stash yips from me, who spent most of the game in misery hunting stashes, remember that barge you go to to help either the stalkers or bandits? CRAWLING in stashes, 6-7 if I remember correct, including a max grade repair kit, shitloads of repair parts, and 4000 RU worth of vendor trash. Also, try to get on top of the gas station. There is a gun up there that will make you weep at the early game utility and ability to carry you through a decent chunk of the game.

And where'd you bury the bones? o3o

Also yeah, it seems silly that repair kits can't at least be a refillable tool instead of disposable. Same reason I found myself irked at Fallout New Vegas, though at least the only disposable crafting component would be the wrenches. Plus, if I can fix up a high-tech energy weapon, why the hell can't I use it on armor? ;_;

Repair systems in games are usually a bit wonky but Misery aims for realism, that's where it gets its difficulty from and it tries to avoid artificial difficulty, such as single use repair kits.
I'm not really interested in specifically looking for stashes I've been told about, I'd rather just find them if I find them kinda thing. If I'm in an area that I know a stash is in already I'll sometimes grab it if I just 'happen' to find it though.

Also I hate snorks in vanilla, I'm just going to never go near them in Misery. Controllers, Snorks and Chimeras are long range explosives only for me, which makes the IEDs a welcome addition. Nothing in a game has ever scared me like Controllers do and Snorks and Chimeras are too fucking jumpy to hit properly, plus Chimeras will fuck you up anyway.

That's something every game seems to struggle with, yeah. Plus, no effective distinction between cleaning and repair.

HA HA! CHIMERA! HA! OH!
Good luck with that. Also, burers. That ability of theirs to pull your weapon out of your hand is just fantastic. Oh and the poltergeist. You are never going to get the maps from the crashed helicopter unless you can get a large supply of weed or the PMK gas mask with the psy shielding upgrade.

I just lobbed grenades at the poltergeists, basically saturation bombed the area with them, then smoked a lot of weed and sprinted in to grab it. Still nearly died.

Did you get the same trigger I got? There's a trigger in MISERY for that helicopter that does nothing about 50% of the time, and the rest of the time it picks a random pack of something to throw at you.
I got 6 snorks once, only survived that by climbing on top of the helicopters rotor. Another time I got five mercs rolling up on the helicopter. Two psudogiants was the worst overt thing I ever got, while the pair of controllers was a very tricky. I've seen other people get a trio of chimera or burers or four blood suckers. I've never seen anyone get a pack of dogs, psudodogs, a psydog, zombies, or another poltergeist.

Most of the time I get the snorks.

I booked it home while being chased by a chimera after I grabbed the document. No idea if it was the trigger, but it sucked.

Smrter made you hallucinate whenever you went near the helicopter in the swamp, and the circus anomaly too, but none of the psy anomalies made you hallucinate oddly enough, which wasn't fun at first either way, being mobbed by any one of the three worst things in the game just for the fucking maps seems like fucking hell though.

I'm sure I'll be geared up enough to deal with it by the time I do it though, I always put off the helicopters for a really long time while I fuck about and hoard shit to drag to Yanov.
